List of site changes (report bugs here!)

What's working, what's not working... feel free to reply with pet peeves, etc, I'll integrate them into the main post as appropriate.

Most recently-added features / bugfixes
August 29-31, 2004:
  • feature: search reenabled
  • change: new database server deployed--site should be faster
  • feature: added first-line summary on mouseover thread title in forum listing (suggested by 1p1p1i3)
  • feature: added caching to some gallery, forum, and threadviews
  • change: minor gallery text additions (show moderator, give credit to Uptown, line breaks on descriptions displayed properly when clicking through on an image)
  • bugfix: colored text inside quoted areas doesn't break anymore (reported by Natsume)
  • change: new, shorter "message has been edited" wording (suggested by EvilWhiteMale)
  • bugfix: subscribed threads were not being updated in My Org
  • change: importing articles from alt.music.prince was really slowing down the forums; fixed
  • bugfix: who's online box (at least) would overrun homepage footer (CSS issue)
  • bugfix: who's online box on homepage really sorts alphabetically now
  • bugfix: moderator tool goes to White Screen of Death after performing action (this also fixed the bug of editing a post going to WSoD)

September 5-7, 2004
  • workaround: orgnotes database table getting corrupted. seems to be a bug in the new version of mysql we're hitting. It's fixed in the next-to-be-released version of mysql, but in the meantime I'm not trying to optimize the table daily--which seemed to cause the problem. So, orgnotes should be 100% working again!
  • feature: you can now log-in from the homepage again. (suggested by Tessa)
  • change: images (besides emoticons) were never "allowed" in signatures--that was a bug. a bug that is fixed now smile sorry if you liked having images in your sig, but they're distracting! (mentioned by Tessa)
  • bugfix: only "approved" (visible) events will trigger alerts to be sent out
  • feature: the same special codes and emoticons now work in orgnotes (suggested by lilmissmissy)
  • confirmation message below header on page after sending orgnote (suggested by lilmissmissy)
  • bugfix: can now see what (but not where) other mods are on the site in mod portal page
  • bugfix: broken links to edit events off mod page now work
  • bugfix: no more WSoD when banning user from mod action tool
  • bugfix: orgPops work again!
  • change: make fonts on the site bigger (suggested by Spookymuffin) I've increased the size a bit...
  • bugfix: record has changed since last read in table 'pop' error should no longer be displayed (reported by AlfOfMelmak)
  • bugfix: 'edit post' was working. then it was broken. finally fixed again... and the "WSoD" some people got after editing, the last week or so, should be fixed too.
  • feature: moderator link(s) on nav bar (suggested by Tom)
  • bugfix: search is kind of fixed again (was kind of broken... again)
  • feature: added a preference for where you want to go after logging in on the homepage (on the My Org/Privacy screen: http://www.prince.org/pre...?e=privacy ) (idea from complaint by psychodelicide)

September 12, 2004
  • bugfix: deleting posts updated thread summary properly (doh!)
  • change: "trusted member" was a poor name for the level which allows more posts/day... so I've changed it to "prolific poster", which makes a lot more sense
  • change: added measures to stop multiple simultaneous searches from same user
  • added support for (HTML4 deprecated) strikethrough tag, because it can be useful sometimes and seems to still work in all browsers
  • changed format of google ads to be less intrusive (but hey, still click on 'em if they're interesting!!)
  • bugfix: filter comments in profiles better for illegal HTML tags

September 14, 2004
  • bugfix: who's online on homepage should be really fixed now! (that it was still broken pointed out by Teacher)

September 16, 2004
  • bugfix: lurking users no longer show up on Who's Online list
  • feature: add list of your most recent postings (threads and responses) to 'my org' page, including showing if there's responses (like subscribed threads, but automatic) (suggested by drmcmeekle)

September 12, 2004
  • feature: added forum jump to top of threadview and forum overview pages (suggested by GrayKing!)

October 6, 2004
  • bugfix: removed forum jump from bottom of threadview page to fix javascript warning/errors
  • feature: added "role titles" to users and posts

October 12, 2004
  • feature: added "automatic edit box resizing" feature (defaults to disabled; turn it on in forum preferences)

Stuff that needs attention, and priority (priority in bold)
  • possibility of changing font size based on user preference (suggested by Althom), i will investigate this at some point... low
  • allow mods to see who is subscribed to a particular thread very low
  • use "standard" editor textarea with emoticon hints etc, for orgNotes medium-low (suggested by Steadwood)
  • auto-resize posting textarea as needed? low

Other stuff people have asked about
  • show all times (on posts, etc.) in user's local timezone. This is a "distant future" feature. It would actually be a big pain in the butt. I might do it, but no time soon. (suggested by doctormcmeekle)
  • no longer possible to see what section of the site other users are on--but this was not a terribly useful feature anyhow, and I probably won't reinstate it.
  • profiles etc. in chat used to open in a new window, but don't anymore (suggested by gooeythehamster) invalid! I cannot reproduce this, except with the tabbrowser prefs extension on Firefox. Without that it works fine... gooey, check your setup!
  • searching for a users posts with the search engine doesn't always give great results (reported by HotThang) -- my response: don't do this! smile You should go to someone's profile to see the list of their recent posts.

As a new "orger", I just want to take a moment to say how impressed and pleased I am with this entire site! I know this is a great deal of work for you and the other "mods" but I have found that I am enjoying this site as a twice daily, guilty pleasure! Thank you for enabling us to share the wonders of Prince!

Hi Ben...nice work. I do notice a performance improvement. smile

Hey...maybe you're tired of hearing about this, but the login needs to stay on whatever page you're on, not go to "My org" or any other preset page. I know you have a rationale for this, but it feels wrong...when you're logging in, you expect to login, not be whisked away from what you were looking at. And it's not just the home page...I can be looking at P&R, decide to log in, and zoom--I'm sent elsewhere, never mind that it is sometimes a blank white screen. sad

Speaking of blank white screens--the thing they all have in common is that they only happen during a form submit. hmmm

Today while in chat, one regular 20 sec update of page failed and I got to the page that says "Sorry, you don't have the authority to view this page" or something to that extent ( I forgot to take it down, sorry sad ) When I hit "chat" from that page I got straight back into the chat without having to log on again or anything.

Yeah, this seems to be the error you get when the database is too slow... for example, when a big search is happening. We're investigating how we might be able to fix this, no easy solution has popped up yet. But, you shouldn';t worry about that error--and hitting reload on the browser is usually enough to continue.

The site has been sooooo sllloooowww lately, and sometimes fail to load after a few minutes, that only closing all browsers and starting fresh helps, or just waiting a minute or two, but still it's very very very slow bawl

I knowwwww, sooooo slowwwww (slow mo).

When this happens, just wait a few minutes and try again. It's not a great solution, I know, but it does come back to normal speed after a few minutes...

no notes are showing up in incoming or outgoing...

there was a long list in outgoing - now it's gone - have sent some since then and they just haven't shown up at all - although i know at least one made it to the recipient.

OK - it seems to be working again... all that had dissappeared is now back.

#1 When I go into a thread, scroll all the way down to the bottom to jump to another forum and select "go", I get the following message:

Invalid forum
Sorry, the forum you've attempted to view does not exist!
Everytime this happens I have to click on the forums link, then the thread etc.bawl

#2 Timing out too fast: while writing org notes or replying to a thread I gather my thoughts while typing and it is very frustrating to type up everything, hit submit and everything you typed disappears due to a timeout fit. I have started to copy my text just in case I take too long typing up my thoughts/opinion on a topic because of the timeout, after the timeout I have to go to the homepage, click on the forums link, find the thread I was just in, find the person I was replying to, then paste my text that I copied previously, then submit. Please stop or at least extend the timeout on org notes and posting on threads.

#3 typing in password to log in multiple times - I walk away from the computer, come back to reply to a thread and I am constantly asked to log back in, why??? I feel that once I've logged in with my password I should'nt have to keep doing it every 5 minutes.

Okay, I'm not seeing any of the threads jump to the forefront when they get a new post! What's happening here??? If a thread is on page two, and you post on it, it stays on page two!!!

Look above the `blue line` above the word `topic`. You'll see an option to switch between what you're getting now, and what you had before.

Click on that you should! wink

If you want to keep that forum jump box at the bottom you can do it with this code:

var o1=document.forms[2].fid;

var o2=document.forms[3].fid;
var i;
for (i=0;i<o1.length;i++) {
if (o1.options[i].value == 3) {
o1.selectedIndex = i;
o2.selectedIndex = i;
break;
}
}

Yeah... the thing is, the generated HTML for the forum jump box is precalculated and cached, and assumes it will only be used once per page. I'm not sure I feel like reworking the cache code to handle either case. But maybe. Thanks for the code snippet smile

Just a simple one Ben.On the "My Org" page i have the list of threads i've posted and whether there's a new post.I've stopped subscribing to topics as this i hope is what it's about, that to find if someone's posted we used to get an Email, which must be a bother to you, and now i prefer to just check "My Org".
I've got a page of about 35 listings of threads i've posted in, which have generally 'Died'. How long have you Enabled this function to last.i.e.Is There away of deleting the Dead Threads which are just taking up space on the page.Surely this function isn't gonna list every thread i've posted in Ad Infinitum?
Explanation of "Your recent posts":

This is a list of forum threads that you've most recently started, or posted replies to. In addition to being a quick way to jump back to the discussions you were most recently involved with, it gives you a quick overview of which threads have had new activity after you posted. The "new posts since last thread view" column will be "YES" if, after your most recent post, someone else has responded.

P.S. Thanks for your time and genius in creating and maintaining one of the best sites on the Internet.The social growth this site produces is invaluable to all Members peace
