What is happening to the movement? I have just heard some very disturbing news. Some sites are asking if people would pay to become members of their site. I understand the woes of having site finance problems, especially if you really want to market your site in large areas. However, I want to extend a message of caution to them, and to any other site considering that move.
When you start charging people money to be members of a community, it begins to defeat the entire purpose of a "community". Asking for donations or help is ok and many members would step up to the plate if you simply ask. But, by making it mandatory, it is too controlling. The only way it works is when member benefits outweigh the cost of membership fees. Like for example- if a community ever had to charge, we could offer free copies of the physical audio CD's from projects. If any organization does charge, they should offer major benefits. A revolution should not be capitalized upon. Brings me to mind of people making a bazillion dollars off of "The Passion of the Christ". People were walking around with crucifixion nails as necklace pendants. That was WACK. No one should capitalize on that, nor should they capitalize on a revolutionary movement such as Prince and funk related sites. There is a MOVEMENT happening, and we cannot forget that.
