Although u have to make it long and thin and discrete otherwise it's just annoying.

don't. it's really annoying. this practice was running rampant at another discussion forum i've frequented semi-regularly. it got so bad that i had to leave because thread pages weren't loading completely because people's banners/sig pics weren't showing up for several minutes.

People can post emoticons in their sigs, last time I checked. As for other images, even if there is a hack to include them in your sig, doesnt mean you should.

Ben put limits on the size of avatars to help keep the pages from loading too slowly. If everyone starts throwing all kinds of pictures in their profiles, including animated gifs, thats going to defeat the purpose.
