IT'S JUST TOO EASY TO START A NEW THREAD!

Benjamin, let me start by saying I love you.

Second, over the past two days I've come across 2 threads that were completely irrelevant & most likely "responses" to a thread already in progress. I know my findings indicate that I lurk too often, but that's beside the point.

Apparently, the ease of starting a new topic is too much for some people despite all the colorful shit @ the top of the "start a new discussion topic" window.

I just think it should be a bit harder for people to start a new thread. Maybe it could lead them to a screen that asks them questions like, "Do you truly intend to start a new thread? Have you checked for recent threads on the same topic to avoid dupe threads? Is your thread lame and therefore not worth creating?"

The "report to moderator" window has little blurbs about what to report, I think the same kind of thing could be done to caution people when making new threads.

That is all, thank you for listening.

Yea.. I guess you get the good threads with the bad, just don't have to reply or read the ones we don't concur with...

Although I understand where you coming from CalhounSq, can get hard to filter out some of the less than desirable threads, but I still think it's cool that people can easily discuss topics that are on their mind etc... I don't know..

thats why I don't make these decisions wink

The threads can be fun sometimes but I gotta agree that there are way too many popping up. What I really don't get is when an item in the News section also pops up under the Hot Topics section.....like today's Alan Leeds' review. Why have 2 places to respond/comment on it when there really needs to be only 1?

that sounds like a good idea. people aren't stopped from making threads, they just have 2 put a bit more thought in2 the thread they r starting.

Hey, be cool, Bart, should we stop asking questions if we haven't read "D.M.S.R." yet, too? wink

This is a tough one... I don't mind adding some wording to the 'create thread' page that explains it's not for responding, but i also don't have a problem with zapping threads that are nonsense. I will probably add some wording over the weekend; I'm swamped at work right now.

I think people will get the hang of it, eventually, too.

You are right about easy making threads but for someone who is quite new to this site I think it is cool that I can start a thread. It is even better if the thread is read by others and replied to. There are some threads that don't grab your attention but then I don't read them. If you don't like something don't do it.

Yeah,I gotta agree with Calhoun. Many of the new threads being created are just continuations of other threads. For example, there are several "List your Top 10 albums"-type of threads already.I know these types of threads are fun,but come on people....do we really need to keep doing them?

Welcome to the world of un-moderated forums!

This was one of the benefits of the PPML, because we would ask the weekly question, and try to "guide" the discussion. The questions would come from the people though.

What "COULD" happen, would be to have some of these "often asked" threads, is to create a separate forum for them, that only Prince.Org can start discussions in. Then once a discussion is deemed "Frequently Asked" enough, just put a link to the discussion in the new forum.

Hope that made sense.

AGAIN, I'm not saying make it impossible for anyone to start a thread - I'm saying make it a bit more difficult than it is now.

The "start new thread" window damn near looks like the "add reply" window, which I think is confusing to some of these dorks who keep creating threads either by mistake or because they're too lazy to see if a similar thread already exists...

Calhoun...

do you use other Bulliten Boards on the net? I do..been using them for years...and I gotta tell you...people over and over point out the same concerns that you do. And not a single place I visit has ever changed their format.

I think the best policy is: If you think a thread is unneccessary..dont post or read it!!!

One thing that seems to be missing here, that other BB's have is a search option.. Say someone wants to read all about Princes "arse".. they can type in "arse" and find all the threads that contained that word.

But don't forget this is all in its new stages. Ben has been doing an awesome job of taking peoples ideas into consideration. I think we are just gonna have to wait and see how this thing fruitats (sic). Dont feel that your obligated to read everything here. And enjoy the community.

-nmh

ps. that cross-thread issue...EVERYONE HATES IT..ACROSS THE NET!!! but it never ever goes away...the sooner you get accustomed to that fact...the sooner you will forget its an issue..trust me, i used to get annoyed as hell too.

This site is rapidly degenerating.

Devote-a-thread? Give me a frickin' break!

We need a new forum for "moderated" discussion. I'm not volunteering, but I'm sick of reading the same "What's his best jam, what's your top 10__" threads over-and-over.

Another site that I frequent regularly uses volunteer moderators to at least make sure that threads are started in the proper place, and to make sure that people aren't always posting off-topic. There are new threads started daily here that are in the wrong section, are redundant, or are spam.

It's making it hard to quickly find Wellbeyond's words of wisdom for the day, which takes away from me wanting to visit the site. smile

If you don't like a thread then just move on and don't read it....sheesh rolleyes

What about only having threads up for a couple days, or a week and then deleting them? That might cause duplications but what else can ya do?
