Amen, sister. JT's performance looked like the energizer bunny, rushing to get one more of your hits on the air. Prince used to give us real artistry and music! No comparison once you have seen the real thing.... sigh

The issue that I had was that Justin performed with Prince. This is specifically what Prince spoke against when he talked about Duke Ellington. Prince is not a prop for other artists.

[/quote I thought it was boring compared to last year when Lady GaGa rapelled from the ceiling and jumped off the stage at the end. There was just tooooo much going on. And JT looked like a bum. The song choice for the Prince tribute was weird IMO.

........Wonder why he chose that song?

It gave a special meaning to the performance. It was like Prince was saying to the City that he loved and all of his fans that he died, but not really, because he is not human, he is a dove, he's conscience, he is love. Not body, but soul.

neutral lol I went to a LOT of Prince shows. It doesn't matter how many, it was a lot. And I'm here to tell ya', Prince rushed through as many hits as he could more times than I care to remember. JT is not Prince, duh, but this seems like an odd complaint.

I had a hard time watching the half time performance, not because it was bad, but because I still have a hard time with all things Prince related. I still don't listen to his music much, to be honest. I'm sure I will, but I haven't gotten there yet. I try to come to the Org on occasion, but there's just too many memories.

Anyway, I watched the Super Bowl (and obviously the half time show) at an outdoor party with about 30 people. When it got to the Prince part inside the stadium I was like, "ah damn", and had to kind of look away a bit (which a couple people who know me noticed). Again, not because I had a problem with anything JT did - I really don't. Prince isn't ours - he belonged to millions and millions of people who loved his music and nobody who covers his songs or performs a tribute is doing so because they intended to insult him (or his multitude of fans). But then they went to the outside shot... and things turned purple... and then the symbol... and I was like, "siiiigh." That hit me really hard because it's Minneapolis. I feel like a lot of people are overlooking the fact that JT didn't just snap his fingers and make that happen. That took the coordinated effort of A LOT of people. More than that, it took the coordinated effort of a lot of Minneapolis people. Those people are Prince people. Minneapolis is Prince's town and it probably always will be.Minneapolis got to host the Super Bowl and celebrate Prince with the entire world. So it's with that in mind that I say I'm finding a lot of the complaints about the half time show sadly misplaced. Funny thing is, after it was over the people who know me well started asking me what I thought. Ya know what I told them? .... I told them a lot of Prince fans would be pissed off and talking shit about it like it was the worst thing they'd ever seen. lol lol Thanks for not disappointing, Org.

I loved JT’s performance. The small Prince tribute displaying Prince on a sheet was a bit odd but really ok. I think JT looked forward to his session at PP.

You are not alone as I share your disappointment. But I knew from the start whatever he did or didn’t do people would be angry with it. And apparently everybody knows Prince so everybody knows that he would like it or would like it in it’s ridiculous really. We didn’t know prince even if we think we knew him we didn’t know him, it just breaks my heart. People wanted to so badly hate this thing that they actually asked for that they’re willing to call the tribute something it’s not(hologram) so they can continue being angry about nothing. It’s just really sad because you can’t really mourn, process and find peace when people are so negative all the time. I thought I would come here And be anyone fans who weren’t negative like those on Twitter or Facebook but it’s no better. So I’ll learn to grieve in my own way, if this is what a “family” is supposed to be like I don’t want it. And furthermore for everybody who thinks they know Prince this behavior shouldn’t even exist because it’s not what he stood for he did speak on that as well

Next thing we will have other doing the same. I feel this marks a true end of an era. Prince will now be a caricature of the curly haired 20 something forever, his music used to prop other artists and sell products like baby diapers, toothpaste, fast food restaurants and maybe even beer etc.

Prince publicly spoke about some things but he is not on earth anymore so it does not matter.

People will pay tribute as they see it and forget about the man they are paying honor.

.

I am not talking about the purple at the end - it was wonderful his town did that- I am talking the use of his music used to prop another musician - I get it. It is just sad that this is what will be for Prince for now on when this is the very thing he said he was not fond of-just sorry for Prince for the disregard of who he was as artist and a man.

Prince wasn't fond of a lot of things, but Prince wasn't ALWAYS right. The passing of songs from one person to another, one generation to another, one CULTURE to another, is as old as music itself. Passing music on to new people is what keeps music alive. That's why we're still listening to music that was written 1000 years ago.

As far as this goes... "and sell products like baby diapers, toothpaste, fast food restaurants and maybe even beer etc."... not unless the people managing his estate choose to sell his music for that purpose. And if that happens you should be mad at the people managing his estate and no one else.

Vashtix -- you have summed it up well. The City of Minneapolis' tribute to Prince was touching. JT's use of Prince's image and voice was not appropriate. He did not need to pay tribute to Prince. If he felt compelled to do so, then he should have done the song by himself. Prince specifically stated in an interview that was published by Guitar World in 1998 that he would not sing a duet with a dead artist, and he did not want his voice and image used for such purposes. Prince was not referring to holograms, specifically, but any use of his image and voice for any virtual reality purpose. JT should have respected Prince's expressed wishes.

so a Prince hologram was used? i thought it was just video footage from purple rain movie on a screen thingie. A lot different from the Michael Jackson hologram that used on a award show a few years ago where they had him on stage dancing and singing which was terrible

There was no hologram. Holograms are actual size, not 50 feet tall. Those images were projections, which we can now do at ridiculously huge sizes in HD.

The city of mpls was beautifully awash in purple tonight. (As it was the night he passed and for several days following.) I was at ground level tho so i cant tell you about the overhead view.

I completely agree with both of you. People are just looking for a reason to be mad. It was a good tribute and the thought that counts. You're in Minneapolis, it's really thoughtful to honor Prince, and the way he did it was tasteful. It wasn't over the top and it was Prince singing his own song, which I appreciated the most. And to hear everyone say "Prince wouldn't have like this" It's like we don't know what Prince would like. We all want to protect his legacy but don't be negative all the time. It was thoughtful and Justin did his best to honor him the best way he could. You just can't please everyone and someone will always find a reason to not like something. It was a thoughtful tribute. Lighting up Prince's hometown with his symbol was very nice and it warmed my heart, almost brought tears to my eyes. I completely felt the love seeing his symbol light up across my tv and across his city.
We could have big fun 💜

It was tacky, as usual with someone like JT, but, more importantly, who gave him Prince's isolated vocals to do this? Seems the Estate is doing anything for a buck except doing what make them the most money: poll his fans or even consult with his fans to gauge interest... Just wait for a Jay-Z or Will.I.Am remix of old Prince songs or added garbage to outtakes...
This Superbowl thing was the first big step into fucking up his legacy...
Guess it's time for me to drop off and enjoy the last 40 years...

Yes we do... He was pretty vocal about not being cool with shit like this...
But no one in his estate cares what he would have wanted simply because money talks loudest plus the fact that his estate is clueless what "Prince", the product, was about...

Prince's half time show just took it to a whole new level and 11 years later it still hasn't been topped and I believe it never will.

As for JT's tribute... I find him such a poor artist, specially in this kind of context, where you are either brilliant or it completely fails the purpose. There's no artistry, I think. I don't even like his dancing, but I guess it all comes down to personal taste.
