some info folks may find useful...

the venue is slap bang in the city centre, just off princes street (yes, they named the street after him!).

princes street is the main high street right in the centre of town. it's instantly recognisable as on one side you

have a row of well known high street stores such as hmv, frasers, next, debenhams, primark, etc, and on the other

side you have princes street gardens and a big hill with a castle on the top. the big hill is actually an inactive

volcano where they built the castle hundreds of years ago

[img:$uid]http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-n9RJf5k4MbM/Ubo08zi7GYI/AAAAAAAAAj8/WmL4uxSStzM/s1600/Edinburgh%2520Castle.jpg[/img:$uid]

. if you follow from the top of the castle down the hill,

that street is called the royal mile which used to be the main high street years ago, and forms part of what is

known as the old town. the royal mile is actually about 3/4 of a mile long and if you take a walk down it you will

see lots of historic old buildings and tourist shops and end up at the bottom to holyrood palace, which is where

[img:$uid]http://danny.oz.au/travel/scotland/p/4777c-holyrood-palace.jpg[/img:$uid]

the queen stays when she comes to edinburgh. opposite the palace is the scottish parliament, and next to the palace

[img:$uid]http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/edinburghfestivals/2009/features/cityviews/img/i1249315804.jpg[/img:$uid]

is holyrood park and arthurs seat which is a big hill surrounded by a few ponds. so if you take an afternoon you

[img:$uid]http://www.experienceenglish.com/sites/default/files/attraction-images/edinburgh_arthurs_seat_cropped_and_small_0.jpg[/img:$uid]

can easily visit the castle, the palance and the parliament and see a whole load of stuff without going too far.

you can also take a trip to ocean terminal and see the royal britania if you like big old boats. if you like more

[img:$uid]http://www.rampantscotland.com/edinburgh/graphics2/britannia_ocean1e.jpg[/img:$uid]

modern things or shopping we have harvey nichols and jenners, and the new apple store should be open by then. the

venue is just behind the apple store on princes street - see the white van in the pic below on the right, you take a left there and then a right (you don't have any other option). if you come up waverley steps from waverley station then the apple store is right in front of you so you can't miss it

[img:$uid]http://www.scotsman.com/webimage/1.3472428.1404986134!/image/3030389070.jpg_gen/derivatives/articleImgDeriv_628px/3030389070.jpg[/img:$uid]

so getting to edinburgh you can go by a number of methods including plane, boat and train, or bus or car. the

venue is literally about one minutes walk from the bus station and train station. if you come by plane you can get

either the airport bus into town or the tram, and these take about 50 minutes roughly and don't cost much. if you

get a taxi it's about £20.

there are plenty of hotels near the venue. edinburgh is a relatively small city, it's miles smaller than london. so

getting about is relatively simple. i'll provide more details of hotels later, but the closest hotel from the venue

is motel one which is above the new apple store and just round the corner from the venue. there's another motel one

at the bottom of cockburn street which is about 5 minutes walk from the venue. i know that one is reasonably

priced. theres also an easyjet hotel in princes street about 10 minutes slow walk from the venue, maybe 5 minutes

if you walk faster. those are very basic hotels that have a bed and onsuite bathroom/shower but are clean and

prices start from about £25 a night, so i suggest if staying just one night and you aren't going to spend time in

the room apart from sleeping and getting ready, that you should check this out first. there are also plenty of

holiday inns, radisons, travellodges etc, and if you want posh you have the balmoral hotel which is one minute walk

from the venue, or further up the scotsman hotel, carlton etc. alternatively there are lots of bed and breakfast

guest houses not too far, such as just off leith walk which is just round the corner from the venue and down the

road a bit. there are also a few hostels if you want really cheap. there is a big one on leith walk thats about

10/15 mins walk from the venue. you should be able to find a room for around £50 a night pretty easily. if you want

to go mental and blow piles of money then stay at the witchery which is next to the castle. the food is excellent

too. this is the kind of place people pick for a honeymoon. there are also plenty of interesting boutique hotels

such as the mal maison down at the shore. these can vary wildly in price though

[img:$uid]http://www.weddingvenues.com/image.php?width=612&function=resizeCrop&source=../images/listing_photos/6419_Mal-Wedding-Exterior.jpg[/img:$uid]

the venue itself is split into a number of rooms, and the bar is open during the day so this is the ideal place to

meet people before the party. it does great cocktails so get yourself there early and try a few out.

there are

plenty other bars nearby, along george street which runs paralell to princes street there are plenty of trendy bars

and clubs, plus a weatherspoons, and along rose street which runs paralell in the middle of princes street and

george street there are loads of more traditional bars. rose street is one of the traditional pub crawl streets,

and is popular with people visiting town for sporting events. there is also the cafe royale bar downstairs from the

venue, which is similarly decorated and also open during the day. around the corner from the venue is the newsroom,

and just down from that is pivo, and down from that is the omni centre with a cinema and bars and resturaunts,

including the slug and lettace, the filling station, frankie and bennys and a weatherspoons type cheap bar, pizza

hut, etc. so typical chain group fare. there is a really great buffet restuaraunt next door called cosmos which has

italian, chinese, indian, japanese and all sorts of stuff together. you pay a set fee and eat whatever you want.

refillable soft drinks on tap, and even the beer is pretty cheap. the venue is open till 1am but there are plenty

of other bars and clubs around that are open till 3am. i will look into finding a suitable afterparty venue if

possible and there is enough interest. hopefully somewhere that will let us play prince music in a nearby bar. i'll

also look at arranging a pre party meeting, which will more than likely be from 6pm in the bar at the venue,

[img:$uid]http://www.thevoodoorooms.com/photos-v3/img-500/05_main-bar-05-800.jpg[/img:$uid]

although as the bar is open all day you can arrive as early as you want. i may also arrange an afternoon meetup if

people want to meet and have lunch before going back to get ready for the party

[img:$uid]http://www.thevoodoorooms.com/image-uploads/1233315373_22_range-of-spirits-800.jpg[/img:$uid]

the theme of the party is prince. it's 100% prince music and prince videos. if this party was a cake, it would be a

triple chocolate cake, the type you eat, you love, you want more, you eat more, and then pass out in a diabetic

coma. it's just non stop prince music and prince videos from the moment the doors open until the moment the

security force us to stop. no band, no kareoke, no competitions, no movie screenings, nothing to take away from the

core princeness of the party. there will be some related artists material, such as the time and family and vanity

and appolonia etc, but only the good stuff. it's a dance party. the only non dance material played will be right at

the start when people are coming through the doors. there is a huge projector screen for movie screenings and this

will be used to play the latest, greatest and rarest prince videos all night in a non stop mix. it will make you

feel like you are taking part in the movie, rather than watching it. this will be the first big prince party in

scotland for a long time, in fact there hasn't been a big prince party north of london for a long time. so we are

really hoping that everyone will help in promoting this event by passing the party details around on social media,

such as facebook and twitter so everyone who could possibly be interested in attending will at least be aware it's

happening. so far we have a number of fans from london who are coming up, along with many regular attendees of the

big london parties, plus many more scottish fans who live more locally. prince finally returned to scotland this

year for the first time since 1995 and this scottish party is a week away from the 20th anniversary of the previous

time he played the SECC and the infamous glasgow garage aftershow. the aim is to bring back the spirit of that

aftershow for one night and party like it's 1999. if you didn't come 2 party, don't bother knocking on the door

more details will appear as time goes on. if anyone has any questions about anything relating to the party of getting there or staying in edinburgh, just ask.

anyways, some hotel details...

-

www.easyhotel.com

the easyhotel (by the easyjet folks) isn't the closest hotel to the venue, as the venue is surrounded by loads of hotels, but it's one of the closest and one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest, and it's a chain group and a relatively newly built hotel and it's on princes street itself. you come out the front door and the castle is right in front of you. at the moment for the night of the party rooms start at £45, and others at £51 and £57. all rooms are ensuite with double bed. this hotel is about 10 mins slow drunken walk in high heels at the end of the night from the venue. you will pass by a mcdonalds and a chippy that will be open when the venue opens. or if going to the venue you can get there in about 5 mins if walking quickly without heels, and pass by a couple of greggs in rose street, plus a number of other places like newsagents and off licences. the hotel is basic, but clean, cheap and nearby and ideal for staying just one night if you aren't spending much time in the hotel. i don't think this hotel has a bar or any kind of socialising area or breakfast facilities and the rooms are tiny so no good for post party partying. for breakfast there are plenty of places nearby from starbucks to cafes and pubs in rose street, but when coming to scotland you should eat at greggs the bakers. sausage rolls and donuts and steak bakes are essential. there's probably not much meat in the pies so ideal for vegitarians too

-----------------

http://www.motel-one.com/en/hotels/edinburgh/edinburgh-princes/

the closest hotel is motel one which is above the apple store on princes street and you can literally thrown a stone at it from the doorstep of the venue. this is a brand new hotel opened in the last few weeks. at the moment rooms start at £69 on the party night, which is pretty decent for slap bang in the city centre of a capital city in a new hotel. if you come by train or bus there's absolutely no need to get a taxi to or from the venue - same with the easyjet hotel. this hotel is presumably a lot nicer than the easyjet hotel, and it looks like it has a bar and stuff that normal hotels have. it just depends if the extra £20 or so is worth it. personally i'd suggest if you are sharing a room with someone else, it's worth the upgrade for a bit more space for the sake of a tenner each. this hotel is so close, you could easily crawl from the venue to the hotel

-----------

http://www.motel-one.com/en/hotels/edinburgh/hotel-edinburgh-royal/

there is also another motel one at the bottom of cockburn street which is about 5 minutes slow drunken walk in heels from the venue, or about 1 minute walk from waverley station if you come up the ramp or back exit. this one is £10 cheaper than the new princes street hotel, with prices starting at £59 a room on the party night. i've not been in the rooms but it has a nice wee bar area downstairs and is done up in a trendy boutique hotel style. all 3 hotels mentioned so far are great choices. the easyhotel is the cheapest but it's the most basic. i'd personally suggest this one as one of the best of the 3, as you get the best bang for your buck and for an extra £10-£15 over the easyjet hotel you should have a much nicer stay. you save a tenner by literally walking an extra 5 minutes (and slightly downhill on the way home afterwards). there is a mcdonalds just round the corner from the venue if you want some food on the way back

----------------------

http://www.thistle.com/hotels/united_kingdom/edinburgh/thistle_edinburgh/index.html

this hotel is just one minute walk round the corner. rooms start at £80 a night.

--------

http://www.ihg.com/holidayinnexpress/hotels/gb/en/edinburgh/edbpp/hoteldetail

the holiday inn express is about 5 mins walk round the corner from the venue. it's opposite the omni centre. it has various rooms from £88 a night, including double rooms (2 beds), double bed plus sofa bed rooms, etc. so perhaps 3 or 4 people could share a room. i'd suggest motel one and easyhotel first

----

http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/419/Edinburgh-Central-Rose-Street-hotel

at the moment the travelodge in rose street has double rooms at £43 so this seems an excellent deal. this is about 5 mins walk from the venue and seems to be around the back of the easyjet hotel. you know what you are getting with a chain hotel like travelodge. prices tend to fluctuate a lot depending on time of booking so i'd snap this up if you want a decent bargain

--------------------------------

http://www.edinburghbackpackers.com/

i've never stayed in a hostel, but this place is also just round the corner and seems to be literally part of the same block as the venue. if you want absolute cheapness then here you go.

Dormitory Room £11 per person, per night
Double Rooms £30 for two people, per night
Twin Rooms £30 for two people, per night
Triple Rooms £42 for three people, per night
Quad Rooms £52 for four people, per night

---------------------

https://www.roccofortehotels.com/hotels-and-resorts/the-balmoral-hotel/

if you want posh, then the balmoral hotel is one minute walk from the venue and is one of the poshest hotels in town. prices start at £255 for a room on the night of the party, but i'd personally recommend the royal suite at £1135 for the night of the party

------------------------------

http://www.waldorfastoriaedinburgh.com/rooms-suites/classic-rooms.html

theres also the caledonia hotel on the other end of princes street. prices are similar to the balmoral, although the suites are about £1700 so it's presumably even posher

-------------------------------------------

http://www.thewitchery.com/

this is one of the best hotels in town. its £385 for the night of the party for two people with a champaigne breakfast. the venue is right next to the castle so it's a good 30 mins walk from the venue, but if you were staying there you would get a taxi which would take about 5-10 mins. this is the perfect honeymoon hotel. the food is amazing, and you can also just go for the restuaraunt which is highly rated but not cheap. if you are having a special weekend and can afford it, then this is the place to stay if you want to impress

-----------------------------------

i just got these details by looking at the websites for the hotels themselves, these were hotels that by memory were nearby, but you have the st james centre hotel, jurys inn, hotel inn, ramada, scotsman hotel, george hotel and several others that are really close, although the choices above are going to be the most popular options. it's also worth checking laterooms, expedia and other similar sites and tripadviser for deals. of course the longer you take the book, the more the hotel is likely to cost when the cheaper rooms get booked up. if there is sports at the weekend the rooms will go quickly, but then there are loads of guest houses and places.

if anyone has any special requests regarding accomodation, just ask

some travel info...

-

http://www.citylink.co.uk/timetables.php

citylink buses have various timetables on the link above. there are now night buses between edinburgh and glasgow for example

-

http://uk.megabus.com/

you can go from london to edinburgh for as low as £10 each way, and manchester from about £14 each way. prices vary depending on the dates of travel and how fan in advance you book. you can't yet book for the night of the party so these are just rough ideas

---------------------

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

train times also vary depending on dates of travel. you can't yet book so far in advance but if you look out for the dates tickets go onsale and book straight away you can get the cheapest deals, including cheap first class travel. you can book 12 weeks early and get the best deals.

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-train-tickets

-------------------------

https://uk.megabus.com/megatrain.aspx

as well as the megabus there is the megatrain. see the moneysaving expert link above. it's basically spare unsold tickets on normal trains sold cheap on that site 45 days in advance

--------------------------

http://www.easyjet.com/en/

if you book flights eary you can get cheap deals too. right now you can book flights to arrive on the saturday from £33 and return on the sunday from £29. it looks like the cheapest final price if paid by debit card is £63 return, with all fees included.

-

if you get the train to edinburgh airport you can get either the tram which takes you to princes street / st andrews square, or get the airport bus which also goes to princes street and st andrews square. the tram is £5 single, or £8 return. the bus is £4 single or £7 return. both take about 50 minutes to go from the airport to the end of the line at st andrews square (which is just round the corner from princes street). the venue is just around the corner from st andrews square, and most of the suggested hotels are within 5 mins walk from a bus or tram stop. so flying into town is relatively simple

http://lothianbuses.com/services/airlink?utm_source=Short-URLs&utm_medium=Short-URLs&utm_campaign=airlink

http://edinburghtrams.com/tickets/cash-fares

--------------------

http://www.flybe.com/

flying from machester to edinburgh on saturday and back on sunday is currently £60 inc all fees on flybe

--------------

you can also use sites like expedia to find other deals on travel. typicall the bus is dirt cheap but takes the longest time. flights can be the quickest, especially if travelling from london, but factor in the checking in time and time to get to and from the airports. the train can be the most flexible but sometimes more expensive but you can get an hour closer to the venue by train and have wifi and a bit more space to move about. by train from london the quickest journey from kings cross is 4 hours and 20 minutes. a flight is about an hour, plus check in time and an hour into town after getting out the airport. so going by train isn't always that much longer than by plane

-------------

parking...

you can't really park too easily in edinburgh in the city centre in streets, but there is parking in george street if you can find it, but you are perhaps best to find a car park

http://en.parkopedia.co.uk/parking/princes_street/

http://www.ncp.co.uk/find-a-car-park/car-parks/edinburgh-greenside-place/

http://www.ncp.co.uk/find-a-car-park/car-parks/edinburgh-st-james-centre-elder-st/

these are the two closest car parks, and both are open 24 hours and about 5 mins walk from the venue and not far from the hotels i've mentioned

-------------------

if there is any other travel or parking info required just ask. i don't drive so i'd suggest using google first as that will probably answer most questions

I'll certainly be making the effort to attend this!

Out of interest, when was the last time Scotland

had a proper Prince bash, Unique?

I 2nd Unique's very informative post,

Edinburgh, our beautiful capital is an amazing

place to see and spend a weekend! Lots of

history and a large majority of it's all within the center

as the good man said...So no need to worry about

money too much!

Hopefully by 7th if March we'll have a few albums to

banter about!

it was about 4 or 5 years ago when i did the last one, and before that i think it was 2006, and a few folks from london and all over the place were at that one. one or two from germany and i remember i met someone from america who happened to find it as it was during the edinbugh festival, and i coincidentally met them at the o2 the following year when they came to see one or two of the shows. a small world princeland is!

since then most of the big prince nights have been in london. so this time will be a bit different. 100% prince music and videos, and people can sightsee and do all sorts of other stuff whilst in edinburgh. i would suggest if travelling from afar that people stay an extra day to see the city, and if possible take the friday and monday off, come up friday and do some sightseeing, then go out in the evening, have a long lie in the morning, and have a look around the shops on saturday, go back get ready and come out early for a few drinks before the party, recover on sunday and see more sights and go back on monday evening or late on sunday. i think the last train to london to get back at night is about 7.30pm so you could spend most of the day in edinburgh on the sunday and get back home via train to most places in the uk. or get a late flight home

tickets are now onsale, you can buy online. there is a link on the facebook page

I'll be going 2 this as never been 2 Scotland before. The three London parties this year have been excellent & it will be great 2 meet purple freaks north of the border. Seems strange 2 think that Scotland may be a 'foreign' country for us English folk in ten days time!! Thanx 4 the heads up in advance as i'll probably fly.
