Seriously, I don't think I've ever actually had a Guinness. hmmm

Can I get Belgian beer on tap in Amsterdam? Benelux is practically one big country anyway, right? smile

Yes, you can! But be prepared to double the Belgian price. lol

I'm more about the people than the museums and sites. I'll likely go along with whatever, but I won't be champing at the bit to seek out culture. I'm most looking forward to hanging out in a nice city with some nice people. The main thing for me is that I hope to sit down quite a bit. I enjoy sitting down. Throw in an alcoholic beverage and that's when I really come alive, relatively speaking, which in overall terms means not that much. Should be fun. smile

thumbs up!

Just wrote an email to PJ, maybe useful for others too?

To do Admin

Make a copy of your:

  • passport,

  • Airplane ticket and agency/site where you bought it

  • insurance

  • bank cards.

  • Credit Cards

  • Travel insurance,

  • Health insurance

  • Adresses of people you will write a card

  • Emergency conctact person his/her phones, email, adress etcetera

(Preferably somebody who is practical and capable of staying cool in emergency situations (that's why I never put my dad up as contact person, but a friend of mine. She is better in English and knows what to do. She'll call my dad)

Put the copies in your suitcase and/or daypack. So, in case something happens, you do have all the info you need. Put all this admin stuff in a plastic binder. So we can store it here in my house, and in case of emergency, it's easy to access. And also, E-mail the copies to yourself. You can access them always when internet is available.

Make a list of names and addresses, so we can spend one morning writing cards, and you don't need to search the internet for all the addresses.

Also mark the names and addresses of your address list for who are the emergency contact persons.

I still haven't looked into the cell phone stuff. So, bring your own anyways. Just for emergency.

Getting Around

Rent, loan or buy a second hand bike.
Also buy yourself a public transport card in advance, you can use in bus and train. You need that immediately at the airport, because trains and busses are best way to travel from Schiphol to airport. Don't waste your time on taxi.

Get public transport card

and how to use it.

Sign up at the 9292 website, because their app is great to use for planning your route.

http://9292.nl/en

Money

You can also exchange your dollars for Euro at the airport. Over here, that's cheaper than exchanging it at your bank. So, check the fare before you exchange it!

http://www.travelex.com/
Dutch don't use credit cards that much.
We are used to ATM-cards.
So, bring your ATM-card.
And ask your bank the rate for withdrawing money abroad in Amsterdam.
Because a bank or GWK, charges you for the exchange, but withdrawing local cash from a ATM machine, gives you the most up-to-date exchange rate and no exchange fee.
So, if the withdrawal costs money, you can withdraw a heap of cash at once. You only pay once for the withdrawal costs to your bank, but that's probably still cheaper than an exchange fee.
Every shop and restaurant has a atm thingy, so you can pay with your ATM card. Check with your bank if they charge any fee if you pay at a store or restaurant with your ATM code in Amsterdam. If you have to pay a fee for every time you use your ATM-card, it might be cheaper to use cash.

Or, if you know the pin number of your credit card, you can use your credit card as an ATM card in shops. But not all shops are utilized for Credit Cards. They are all utilised for ATM cards.
Buying stuf tax free and Vat Refund

Don't buy anything yet, if you can also buy it tax free at the airport before your flight! Especially Gin!

Also, you might want to check out how to get the taxes of your purchases back at the end of your Amsterdam trip.
Because VAT is 21% in Holland, if you get the VAT back of your big purchases, it's worthwhile.
The threshold is 50,- Euro per shop. So, if you have purchased items that collectively are 50 euros, you can get the 21% Vat back.

I did a little search, and it seems that signing up for the Global Blue Card is a good option.

Well, if you got the copies, it's easier for us to make arrangements in case of emergency.

Otherwise, we have to sort that stuf out. And if something happens, we probably can spend our time better handling your care and making arrangements for you.

And you know by now that I don't have any confidence in doctors and am slowly becoming a hypochondre, right?!

You are English, right?

So, you are entitled to medical care around the world and you can send the bill to your government.

Well Zombee has made good on both Seattle and Amsterdam, so I see no reason for Minneapolis not to happen.
