Minneapolis Funk – A Prince & associated artists - London Party - Sat 25th Aug 2012.

Minneapolis Funk originates from Prince’s creative output from the late 70s to mid 80s whereby Prince wrote and produced phenomenally for himself and associated acts such as The Time, Vanity 6, Sheila E, The Family, Jill Jones etc.

The production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis - two former members of the original line-up of the Time, went on to produce some of the greatest Soul and Rn’b records of the 80s through their work with Janet Jackson, Alexander O’Neal and the SOS Band etc. As Minneapolis natives they were pivotal in shaping what is often referred to as the “Minneapolis sound”, and their productions undoubtedly have that unique element of “Minneapolis funk”.

Other notable acts originating from Minneapolis during the 80s includes: Lipps Inc., Andre Cymone, Dez Dickerson, and Ta Mara and the Seen. From the late 80s and 90s BrownMark, St Paul, Ready For The World, The Sounds Of Blackness, and Mint Condition showed that this city was still capable of producing great music. Although some of these artists are not considered as coming through direct ‘lineage’ of Prince, they have unquestionably continued to showcase that unique Minneapolis sound.

Prince, The Time / Original 7even, and Jam and Lewis continue to produce great music. In appreciation of this Revosoul Presents...“Minneapolis Funk” – A night of Minneapolis Funk n’ Soul pioneered and inspired by Prince and associated artists.

Music will be selected on the night by: DJ Clinton Oliver

DJ Clinton Oliver has played at the Prince-fan favourite event: The Prince Boat Party - and has an extensive music collection of Prince, The Time, Shelia E, Sounds of Blackness, Mint Condition, SOS Band, Janet Jackson, etc to play an exclusive DJ set on the night.

Music will be from the late 70s to present day. It will be a night whereby Prince fans and fans of his associated artists party together to the formidable sounds that have come out of this city.

Date: Saturday 25th August 2012

Time: 7pm till 2pm

Venue: Nineteen Twenty Bar, 19-20 Great Sutton Street, Clerkenwell, London, EC1V 0NB

Price: £7.00 – early bird tickets are available from Sat 7th July for a limited period at £5.00

Cos this is where the Purple Party People Be!

A big thanks to all who attended the Minneapolis Funk - London (uk) party on Saturday night. DJ Clinton Oliver played a wonderful / fantastic set - selecting the best in Prince, The Time, Wendy & Lisa, Sheila E, Mazarati, George Clinton; Chaka Khan, Mint Condition etc. It was FUNKY! The venue & staff were excellent & very welcoming. It had been a dream to host 'a Prince night' - We can say now -'I've done that!' Those who have hosted parties before us - We truly respect your drive and energy - these things are not as easy as some may think! Thanks to Jo & Freedom for your kind words of encouragement and the link to Clinton, Meet-up etc.

As fans we hold our PurpleMusic dear to ourselves because we know & understand its UNIQUENESS. Regular nights out don't contain enough PurpleFunk. I think we'd all agree that it's a shame that there aren't many more Purple Parties! Yes we can share videos & music via the internet but theres nothing better than partying & dancing together in the same place at the same time. Some people on the night came on their own - you all know why - 'their friends arent into Prince etc' - but when they arrived they realised that they werent on their own. It might sound corny - but we are Family. We've met some really nice people through arranging this & we're going to build on this. There will be more parties people! We hope that for those that couldn't make it - we see you at the next one.

Oh... and to Shane Lust – we hope that you had a Funky Good Time – and that you were able to get up for your wedding the next day! Congratulations – to you and your new wife – our New Zealand True Funk Soldier! Safe journey back home.
