EVENT: PURPLE RAIN Screening & Sing-A-Long

Date: Thursday, August 6th 2009

Related link: Click here

Starts at 1930

Location: Prospect Park Bandshell
Prospect Park West and 9th Street

Locale: Brooklyn

Cost: Free/Donations

Details:
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of history's greatest pop albums, and the extravagantly, hilariously whacky and over the top film it inspired (the apotheosis of both the purple one's genius and self caricature), we invite you to don something lacey and ruffled and come get your Prince on. We'll have lyric subtitles, but you know the words already. Joy Dragland of Brooklyn's live disco orchestra Escort certainly does; Purple Rain was the first cassette she ever owned. Dragland and others from Escort will lead the sing-along, after the band puts everyone in the mood with an opening set. (Note: The film is Rated R and admission of anyone under 17 will require an accompanying parent or guardian. The whole evening will feature scenes of extreme sexiness throughout.)

I was sick all week and I was not going to go to this, but my friend talked me into it and I am sure glad he did. It was a beautiful night in Brooklyn. Prospect Park was packed with people of all ages, races, and walks of life. The night began with a Disco/Wedding band type ensemble that had us moving to the beat for a while, but played a couple of songs too many.

There were lots of orgers in attendance: Purplecam, Utopia7, Poorgoo813, Flycktyt(sorry if I spelled this wrong). Across the way, I spied Revelationsunshine, Lovenharmony, and a few others from their crew.I am sure there were many others. The place was packed. Brooklyn showed their love to Prince in a major way. We renamed Prospect Park, Paisley Park last night. In fact the hosts said that they planned this in honor of Prince's 25th anniversary of Purple Rain and because he surprised them in 2006 with an appearance at the Maceo Parker show, the night before GMA.

Well last night the whole park recited the lines, and danced and sang to EVERY song. At the end..... The crowd was on its feet and we gave a very loud, NYC style standing ovation to the Prince of Music.

Good to see everyone there. There had to be over 2000 people. Some no doubt just from the hood, but most were there because of Purple Rain. Great event to hold us over until another concert (cheaper too!!!!). The only thing that was a disappointment was that I was waiting for the screen to rise at the beginning of Purple Rain and Prince to be there to play it live!

I knew I spelled your username wrong ficktyt, but I didn't have the energy to go looking for you. It was nice to see you. I added you to my buddies so I won't forget how to spell it again. biggrin

I was also hoping that when that movie screen went up, Prince would be on the other side.

Me too! That whole evening there was incredible. It really felt like a Prince concert. We need more of this here in NYC. I had a blast!
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
