If any of you music heads have never heard of Vinx then you will know what I am currently struggling with...to a degree. You see, last week I went to see this man perform and he's been one of my favorite singer/songwriter/performers since like 94 and it was a surprise to walk in on his set as I had no idea it would be him!

Anyway, he does a Singers Soul Kitchen Retreat periodically throughout the year for aspiring songwriters, poets, musicians to all come together for four days at his home all just collaborating and vibing to everyone's energy and talents.

So while at this performance it came time for people to sign up for the drawing to be a guest at the Soul Kitchen. Kisha told me to sign us up, I was hesitant as there was a mad rush to do so from the crowd. I waited for the line to diminish and she told me again...."Go sign us up!"....I was like...."Ok"....

Turns out she fucking wins!!! Now here is the dilemma....IT IS ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND from Thursday through Sunday!! Same as the much anticipated Atlanta Invasion!

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me! While I am no songwriter, poet is not too much different a breed and his representative reinforced this thought when we were speaking to him. He is going to put us up in an Bed 'n Breakfast the four days and it is just an awesome retreat for a rainbow coalition of music heads, hippies, singers, musicians, etc!!

I have been to many invasions and know this is going to be a huge success, but what am I to do? I figure I would make it to at least one night of the invasion, but my heart is telling me to go be a part of yet another beautiful gathering of wonderful souls.

The "Songwriter Soul Kitchen" retreat is the brainchild of Eklectic Soul based in Georgia. Their mission is to bring artists together to collaborate and contribute to the continued evolution of soulful music. Note I use the word "soulful" because "soul" is often associated with only R&B. There is nothing exclusionary about the SSK as individuals brought r&b, pop, country, house, blues, etc�.flavors to their compositions. Long story short, singers, writers(songs and poetry), producers, musicians, whether established individuals or novices (like myself) worked in groups to create original songs.

Although this was the most obvious intention of Eklectic Soul's efforts, it's what happened in between the moments of creation that affected so many people. There was a feeling of camaraderie amongst the participants�Many barriers were broken through both creatively and personally for many of us�There was truth and vulnerability surrounding each of us. It was a place where you could just be.As one participant tearfully revealed, she had never felt so much love from total strangers.

The weekend culminated in a performance at "The Five Spot" in Atlanta featuring individual artists (Vinx, Julie Dexter, Olu, Doria Roberts, Kuku..all in my top friends on my music page) and a couple of the songs that had been created within the previous 48 hours. Don't ask how it happened, but why did I find myself on the stage singing backup on a song or two (�scary as shit, but did it anyway�besides, my mic wasn't that loud, I hope�lol).
