As selections of hits, rarities, and remixes from both artists are presented over the course of the evening, audience members square off in funky battle, holding signs bearing the mug of their favored entertainer to judge which one is the true king of pop. This sure ain't the place for cynics, but Darling Nikkis and Dirty Dianas are all welcome to participate." - SF WEEKLY DJ Dave Paul

This years COLLECTOR show is dedicated to the memory of Tony Silver. We will be playing the visuals of his documentary Style Wars on a wall all night long. Director of the legendary hip-hop documentary Style Wars, Tony Silver, died on February 1st after battling an irreversible brain condition for several years. Shot in New York City in the early '80s and originally airing on PBS in 1983, his documentary is considered to be the first film about hip-hop culture. While the 70 minutes covers rap and breakdancing, its main focus is on graffiti, which at the time was viewed by some as a groundbreaking art form. Style Wars shows an altered urban landscape and serves as a snapshot of life here in the early '80s, with a "cast" ranging from Mayor Koch to renowned graffiti taggers to the Rock Steady Crew to subway maintenance workers. For those of you who have an interest in making a donation in Tony Silver’s name, his family has selected (Out)Laws & Justice http://www.outlawsandjustice.org an organization close to Tony Silver's heart. (OUT)LAWS & JUSTICE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 11 to 14 discover their role in creating a just and civil society by examining the roots of violence and conflict-resolution skills to deal with disputes.
