1. Take the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. You can take the subway (2, 3) all the way downtown to the last stop in Manhattan and catch the ferry there. It goes by the Statue of Liberty--close enough to get good pics, then when you get to Staten Island, you have to get off the ferry, but as soon as you get off, just run (or walk briskly) back to the entrance and get on again to go back to Manhattan. The round trip would be about an hour or 1½, depending on how long you have to wait for the ferry in Manhattan. I think they leave every 30 minutes... When you get on the ferry go to the side on your right--that is the side that is closest to Ms. Liberty. On the way back you can also get a nice view of the Manhattan skyline. I went once at sunset and that was pretty cool. Best part about it---it's FREE! (ps. from the Ferry Terminal you could walk to Ground Zero, too. Not suggesting that as a tourist destination, but sometimes people want to know where it is. ) 2. Walk around the reservoir in Central Park--great views of midtown Manhattan from the northern part of the reservoir. Or any walk through Central Park. Strawberry Fields (Yoko's tribute to John) is around 72nd Street on the west side--and the Dakota, where he lived is across the street. 3. Take the L subway to Williamsburg, Brooklyn aka Hipster-ville. I avoid it like the plague, but if you want boutique stores and funky neighborhood, I think this is a good place to go. 4. If you are in town on a Friday night, go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and ask how to get to the roof. They have a bar up there and great views of the city. Don't pay full admission to get in, it's suggested so you just have to pay something--even $1 and they'll let you in. Or if the weather is bad, head to the Museum of Modern Art. It's normally $20 to get in(!), but they're free on Friday evenings. Six floors of famous paintings including van Gogh's Starry Night and Andy Warhol's Soup Cans. (My fave musuem!) 5. I am going to orgnote you the wrecka stows you'll want to go to for Prince rarities. I'm actually heading out of town this weekend, but orgnote me if you have specific questions about anything and I'll try to respond. . [Edited 8/23/07 8:01am] | |
