NY orgers: This friday Rhythm Republik pays tribute to SOTT at BAMCafe!

This friday, Brooklyn's own Rhythm Republik and friends perform Sign 'O' the Times

When
Friday, June 8, 2007
9:00 PM

Where
Brooklyn Academy of Music - BAM Cafe

30 Lafayette Ave
Brooklyn, New York 11217
40.6869, -73.9778

Fri, Jun 8 at 9pm
Called one of the most important achievements in pop music history by The Guardian (UK) and "a masterpiece" by Rolling Stone, Prince's monumental double album Sign 'O' the Times was one of the 1980's most ambitious and unflinching self-portraits. Punctuating sultry ballads and rock anthems with straight-faced references to AIDS and the drug war, it was as timely as it was danceable. But leave it to Brooklyn's own Rhythm Republik to make Prince’s S.O.T.T. a sign of our own times. Assisted by an all-star roster of special guests, they'll be recreating the album note for funky note, live during Sundance Institute at BAM.

See ya there, NY orgers. thumbs up!

Did anybody go? I went!...It was pretty good and the band was tight as hell biggrin ...I got in late so my friend had 2 pull strings to get my upstairs (It was past capacity and no one was leaving)..but once I got up there I was happy... they didn't play every song tho, but everyone they did was nice...If eye was your girlfriend and Starfish and Coffee were exceptional....They had an afterparty where the played acouple more Prince songs (but not that many cuz no one really came...they should have had it right after instead of a 40 min gap inbetween). It was really just the band, me, and a couple hardcore P heads two-steppin and singin off key. Over all good night tho....oh yeah- when the closed with "It's gonna be a beautiful night" a woman came up and played a violin solo over most of it that was remarkable...I hope some one else was there.... cool

hmm Were we listening to the same band?

Tight is definitely NOT the word I would use to describe what I heard. confused I thought they could have used a bit more practice...but then again, I guess you said you missed the first part. They opened with Sign 'o' the Times which was not so good. And they forgot an entire verse of Dorothy Parker--the one where it goes she couldn't see the movie cause she hadn't read the book first. I will give props to the person who sang IIWYG and Adore, he did a very good job, but that didn't have anything to do with the band backing him. (Strange Relationship was good too, but b/c of the singers, not the band so much.)

Didn't care so much for their rendition of It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night--hardly any lyrics and the poor saxophone player and drummer had a bit of trouble with their solos. Not surprised to hear no one went to the afterparty.

Sorry.....

I have to co-sign with Devoted Puppy. I went and the band was far from tight. It was kind of sloppy to be truthful. I really enjoyed the singer that sang Slow Love though. She has a great voice.

sorry...i said tight meaning "nice" (guess i'm still a DC kid at heart)...yeah they fudged up lyrics, and fumbled at times, but what would you expect when someone trys to recapture genius...hey it was a free show.....besides a band can only give back what it recieves....i saw a couple people groovin and i was one of them....did they play housequake?

Yes, I was there. (I did post this thread, duh! wink) And while the band wasn't necessarily as tight as Prince's band, it was still nice to see them pay tribute to one of the greatest albums ever! I loved Chandlar, the falsetto singer. His voice was just as incredible as Prince on those songs. omg

Another thing was since Rhythm Republik is one of my friends on Myspace, this was finally my chance to see them live after missing them so many times. It was also good to see the special guest performers as well (I know a couple of them and performed with them in the past in fact). But the thing was I really wanted to hear THEM come out of Prince's songs. But it seemed like they were just replicating Prince's versions instead of creating their own interpretations with their flavor and sound. Dig?

All & all, the show was aiiight. shrug
