Just in case anyone is thinking about going to this:
I went last time (in December?) and the line was hella long to get in. We got there at 11pm and didn't get in the door until midnight. Then we had to wait in another line for the mandatory coat check. It was okay--they didn't play any remixes or crazy stuff, and they didn't mix the songs together (it was more play one song, play another song). But the crowd was into it and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I'm going to check this out and see what's up. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

How was it?
I went last year and had a "great" time. It was back-to-back music you love, no creative mixes or anything. The best part of it was that people were there to dance, pure and simple. There was hardly any space to move around in. Great vibe! So, how was it? Come here, babe.. yeah...

Hi altavista! I hope you are doing well! I went last Friday night and I have to say I had a blast. We got there at a little after 10 or 10:30. I went with a couple of people and they were starting to get a little antsy with the wait but we eventually got in at around 11. The music was already blasting. I had a great time. I danced from 11:30 to 3:30 STRAIGHT except twice when I went to get water and they were playing MJ . Here is my take on it:
The Pros: 1. The crowd was great. Everybody was into the music and was dancing their asses off. It was tight in there and I'm not a club person but I had fun. 2. Prince sounds great on a loud system. Nothing like hearing When Doves Cry, I Wanna Be Your Lover and Kiss on a great sound system. 3. Hearing MJ's old stuff reminded me why I used to love him so much. He was all about dancing and once upon a time, he was funky. I was also sad because the man who did Rock With You and Billie Jean is gone in my eyes and I wish he was still here with us. The Cons: 1. The DJ sucked ass. He kept on distorting the voices and messing with the bass to make it sound hot when it was not. It messed with my flow and messed with my ears a little bit. 2. The DJ played Prince's music too slow. People weren't going as crazy for Erotic City and Housequake as much as I thought they would but I really think it has to do with how slow the music was played. I thought the DJ was going to Chop and Screw the songs they way they do it in Houston, Tx. 3. It seemed like the crowd and the DJ were more into MJ. The crowd would go nuts for anything MJ especially Off The Wall and Thriller and I couldn't be mad at that. But Mr DJ just kept on making the songs so long. I thought Don't Stop..., Thriller and Wanna Be Starting Something would never end. That part of why I didn't stay till 4. 4. The DJ didn't play P songs like Let's Work, P Control or Black Sweat . But to the DJ's defense, he played Sexy MF and 3121(sounds GREAT on a loud system too). Some of his selections were off. He played the ONA version of The Ballad of Dorothy Parker. That was probably the only Prince song I wanted him to stop playing. He eventually played the SOTT version but I was still over the song. He even played Starfish and Coffee. Not cool to me. All in all I even with the cons, I had a ball and I'd go again. My feet wanted to come off my legs and I fell asleep on the subway (thank God I didn't miss my stop ) but hey it was worth it. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Thanks for the review. The cons are similiar to what I didn't really like when I went in January. Did the DJ turn down the music to have the crowd sing along? That is a pet peeve of mine, and he did that last time I went. I'm glad to hear he played at least one song off of 3121 though...did he do any extended versions? I don't remember hearing them when I went before. Hopefully I'll be around to go to the next one... The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The DJ turned the music down during MJ's Wanna Be Startin Somethin with the "Mama say mama saw moo ma coo saa" part and maybe a couple more songs but I can't remember what they were. The DJ played the extended versions of Raspberry Beret, Let's Go Crazy, Kiss, Pop Life and it sounded like he was playing the 12 inch to Little Red Corvette but he didn't have it play long enough for me to know. I will definitely go to another one of these. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Thanks for the recap, purplecam. I actually didn't make it that night. Now I wished I'd put on my dancing shoes and gone. It looks like the crowd was big enough that they'll do another one... I guess that would be #9.
I wish we had a standing Prince night at one of the clubs around here, like they do in DC and other places. It so hard to believe that there isn't one, considering his following. Go figure. If you hear of anything, pls post. Come here, babe.. yeah...
