Well let's start from the start. And being as longwinded as I am at times here, i'll do this in 2 parts.
Part 1 The NYC Invasion sounded like a good excuse to treat myself to a trip home as a birthday present to myself (3/28). The festivities started while boarding the plane in Los Angeles. I turned around only to notice that the person standing behind me was... ...Howard Hewitt (Shalamar) He asked me if I knew if they were serving a meal on this flight. I answered that I didn't know and we discussed a few mutual friends we had. Arrived in NYC Thursday afternoon and decided to dump all worldly worries and just chill at the hotel with mass quantities of NY deli food and watch the NCAA basketball tournament. That night I slept like a baby. Friday at noon I had a appointment to visit an entertainment attorney friend at his office on Park Ave. This is a guy that has had many name clients but my main interest was his association with the Jazz giants of the past. He was privvy to many of the Miles Davis sessions with Teo Macero. After some good conversation he presented me with these wonderful parting gifts... Ben Webster for Lovers Ella Fitzgerald - The Harold Arlen Songbook - Volume 1 The Great Jazz Trio - Someday My Prince Will Come (Japanese Import, SACD/CD) John Coltrane Quartet - Ballads (Deluxe Edition) John Coltrane - A Love Supreme (Deluxe Edition) ...I'll discuss these in a later thread (along with some other gems that were waiting for me when I returned home). Needless to say, I was quite pleased. On my way back downtown, I remembered that Natisse told me last year (when we were supposed to meet in France) that she didn't have any material by Sly & the Family Stone. Since I was also on the hunt for the latest book on Miles Davis... ...(Miles To Go), I stopped at Borders and picked up something for her along with my book. Back to the hotel to enter musical nirvana for a few hours before it was time to meet a friend of mine, Ira Schickman (songwriter/producer who knows everybody on the planet) at Rudy's Music Shop (vintage guitars) on 48th Street's historic Music Row. (one of the reasons I selected my hotel was because it was on 48th St.) After my drool cup runneth over it was time to head down to what was the most famous music establishment on 48th St... ...the legendary Manny's Music. The pictures of the muscial icons (from Benny Goodman and Charlie Parker to The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix) that shopped there since 1935 are worth the visit. And this picture of the current receptionist... ...wasn't bad either. After hitting 48th Street Ira wanted to take me to lunch. He's knows I don't like sushi but insisted on taking me to Kodama's on 45th St. Really nice people running the place and of course they all knew Ira. I survived by having the beef teriyaki which was very good. From Kodama's we went to see Ira's new studio. It's in a really nice art deco building. Went to visit Nona Hendryx's place but she was out of town. On the way out we ran into Redman who also has a studio in the building... ...Ira & Redman. We cruised around midtown talking until it was time for me to head back to the hotel and get ready to meet the Orgers at Heartland Brewery. Got to the restaurant and met... ... Byron, Natisse, Ocean, Uncle Grandpa, Sweeny79, purplecam, superspaceboy, isobelfq, Cborgman, NWF and jone70. For some reason I didn't get a pic of Sweeny79 Now when i've read Nat's post sometimes I think, "Nobody can be that nice all the time."... ...but just as the pic shows, when you finally meet her you realize that she really is. Here's a classic pic of Ocean... ...taken by Byron. I'll let him explain that one. The dinner was fun and the company was great. Toward the end of the evening at Heartland I got a call from Ira saying, "Let's hang out in The Village." I'll end Part 1 here and pick it up later with my Ira/Village experience and Saturday night's appearance of an anonymous orger. There is a marked ramp up in org activities from this point forward. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Heh..lol...just to make sure there are no wrong conclusions, it was just me trying to get a photo of a reluctant Kylie (I had deleted like five prior pics that Neil took), and she turned away right before the flash (notice my amazing left eye over there on the side)... I'll let theAudience explain why he didn't delete it...lol And wonderful photos and commentary, as always...you truly know how to flesh out the stories behind what you share.. | |
