the gershwin is one that i've been to that's nice and inexpensive, though the rooms are REALLY tiny. if you're just interested in sleeping and showering and you don't plan on having any rock star hotel parties, i recommend it. it's not exactly midtown, but it's around chelsea and is a good midpoint between midtown and greenwich village.

another cool hotel is the washington square hotel...it's in the village, but it has a really pretty lobby and very clean little rooms. it's also right across from washington square park and right around the corner from fifth avenue. if you can find a good deal on orbitz, this is a good place to stay.

I would recommend the Comfort Inn Midtown. Great location and its clean, quiet, and cheap (NY cheap mind you).

I've heard that the Waldorf Astoria is supposed to be a bit old-fashioned but also quite cozy.

aha... doral inn across the street from the waldorf is really nice for a midtown hotel...i don't know how pricey it is, but i went on a campus-sponsored trip to NYC when i was in college and they put us up there...so it couldn't be THAT pricey.

Stay away from the Marcel Hotel. That place is a horrid dump. The air conditioner sounded like a chainsaw, there was no padding in the carpeting (it wasn't even attached to the floor), and the room was the size of a walk-in closet.

Here are some hotels that I know of. Please note, I was just getting prices off the websites.
Personally, I would not want to stay in Times Square--it's so congested and 'touristy' so I put hotels in other areas down too... Chelsea Savoy (NOT to be confused with the Chelsea Hotel where Sid killed Nancy ) 204 W 23rd St (at 7th Ave.) New York, NY 10011 Tel # (212) 929-9353 Fax # (212) 741-6309 www.chelseasavoy.com Single rooms: $99-$125 Double rooms: $135-$250 The Park Savoy Hotel 158 West 58th St (b/t 6th & 7th Aves.) New York, NY 10019 Tel: (212) 245-5755 Fax: (212) 765-0668 Email: parksavoy@aol.com www.parksavoyhotel.com The Park Savoy is one block south of Central Park! Hotel Roger Williams 131 Madison Avenue (at 31st St.) New York, NY 10016 Reservations: (888) 448-7788 Local Number (212) 448-7000 Fax Number (212) 448-7007 info@hotelrogerwilliams.com www.hotelrogerwilliams.com Classic rooms start at $199 Although not near Times Square, this hotel (Roger Williams) is pretty nice. My parents have stayed there, although it’s definitely geared towards a younger, hipper crowd than them! Comfort Inn Midtown 129 West 46th Street New York, NY 10036 phone: 800-517-8364 (toll free) phone: +1 212-221-2600 http://www.applecorehotel...n-midtown/ Rooms start at $179 I think this one might be not be that great--—I had friends stay there and they didn’t really like it... The Westin New York at Times Square 270 West 43rd Street New York, New York 10036 Phone (212) 201-2700 Fax (212) 201-2701 www.westinny.com Rooms seem to start at about $270/night. My mom has stayed here during business trips. She loved their beds so much she wants to buy one! (They do sell them--they're called Heavenly Beds or something. ) Grand Hyatt New York Park Avenue at Grand Central Terminal, New York, New York, USA Tel: 212 883 1234 Fax: 212 697 3772 http://grandnewyork.hyatt.../index.jsp Rooms are running about $240/night Again, my mom has stayed here during business. This one is literally next door to the Chrysler Building and Grand Central Station. Also very close to the NY Public Library (the one with the Lion Statues.) Hope that helps... clarification edit [Edited 2/20/06 1:06am] The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. As well as: Amsterdam Court Hotel Pan American Hotel Metro-Home / United Nations Suites The Moderne Bentley Hotel Astor On The Park I have never heard of any of these, so basically I just googled them so that I could at least tell you about the location. Milford Plaza—that is right in the heart of Times Square. Personally, I wouldn’t stay there for two reasons. 1. I hate the congestion & crowds of Times Square, and 2. if it’s not a huge chain hotel in Time Square, I would worry that it might be sort shady. But you’re a guy so you might feel safer than I would. Plus there website doesn’t show any pictures of the rooms—why not?!? Seems suspicious to me. Amsterdam Court Hotel Hard to tell about this one. It doesn't seem to have it's own website. Pan American Hotel--didn't look this one up (It's 3am & I got lazy!) Metro-Home / United Nations Suites --didn't look this one up The Moderne This one has a great location---just north of Times Square so you would be out of the congestion and not too far from Columbus Circle (which has a mall w/a Whole Foods) and Central Park. Columbus Circle also has several subway lines that stop there. Bentley Hotel This one is right next to the East River, it seems. It’s actually not too far from where I live; and while there is more around than the Astor on the Park ‘hood; it’s mostly Irish frat/sports bars. (I think my neighborhood is ) Also, it will be a good 10 minute walk to the subway, I’d guess. (4 long avenue blocks plus 2-3 short blocks). Astor On The Park --this one is quite far from down town, and to be honest, there isn’t too much around that area (one of my grad school profs lived near there). My vote would be for the Moderne one...it has a good location and it looks clean and somewhat hip. (Plus they have Warhol's Marilyn silkscreen in the pics; so it can't be that bad, right? ) Anyway, hope that helps... The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa.
