LONDON PRINCE WEEKENDER: KARAOKE CONTEST???!!! The organizers have been debating on whether or not to have a karaoke session at the weekender. Karaoke is something you’ll either love or hate…We are in two minds about it so we are asking you for your help on the org to make us reach a decision. The two questions we are asking are…
A) Would you be interested in having a karaoke contest at the party. B) Would you be interested in being a contestant.. The karaoke contest (subject to the response we get here on the org) will happen on the Saturday night of the weekender and last around 1 ½ hrs. It will take place away from the main dance floor (top floor) which will continue pumping out the Prince jams for those who are not interested in watching a karaoke. This is something that we would like to add as an alternative attraction for those who want to take a break from dancing. ‘Dre aka Drezone has agreed to compere the contest. There will be a prize (a cool bottle of bubbly) for not necessary the best singer... but whoever gives the "most entertaining" interpretation/performance as judged by ‘dre and the audience’s reaction to your performance. You can enter as a solo singer or as a duo with a friend. We will be looking for up to 12 contestants who will have to pre-register to enter (details about pre-registering will follow once we know the outcome of this poll). Contestants will have the chance to choose which song they wish to perform from the list below… Prince - When Doves Cry Prince - Purple Rain Prince - 1999 Prince - Lets Go Crazy Prince - Kiss Tom Jones - Kiss Prince - Sign O' The Times Prince - Alphabet Street Prince - Diamonds & Pearls Prince - Thieves In The Temple Prince - Gett Off Prince - Sexy MF Prince - My Name Is Prince Prince - Controversy Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl In The World Prince - Gold Prince - Pussy Control Prince - Baby I'm A Star Sheila E - A Love Bizarre Prince - U Got The Look Prince - The Beautiful Ones Prince - Take Me With U Apollonia 6 - Sex Shooter Prince - 7 Prince - Pop Life Prince - Erotic City Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U Chaka Khan - I Feel 4 U Sheena Easton - Sugar Walls Prince - Cream The Time - The Bird Vanity 6 - Nasty Girl Sheila E - The Glamorous Life Prince - Little Red Corvette The Time - Jungle Love Prince - Delirious Prince - Do Me Baby Prince - Raspberry Beret Prince - I Wanna Be Your Lover We await your views…

Personally, I think karaoke stops the flow of the evening. The music is pumping, you're having a good time dancing, then suddenly it stops, there's muffled announcements about karaoke and then a long pause while the various contestants are rounded up, then inevitably some awful singing which makes you cringe rather than laugh through a PA system that simply isn't set-up for live vocal performances, then finally the disco music starts again and everyone sighs in relief and you can get back to dancing.
I think it's only fun for those competing and their friends. For everybody else, it's a rush to the bar.

I'd agree with you if it were the whole evening, but there would still be a room of dancing upstairs and there could be an allocated time for the karaoke to begin so all those interested could go downstairs to that room. I am a bit biased as I love a good sing song. And it's a laff if we can all camp it up with moves/backing dancers/costume!
The banter etc would be good fun. [Edited 10/6/05 7:18am] The Hottest chip of them all - www.hotchip.co.uk - Get down with Prince

Ewwww...no thanks. I agree with Metalorange that it interrupts the flow of the evening. I hear what you're saying about the upstairs still playing grooves for those who don't want to join in, but it's still putting me off the Saturday night now!
How about a quiz as Savage (and possibly others) suggested? Pay for a form where you go in if you want to join in, then you hand in your completed form by, say 11pm, and the winners are called out at midnight or something? That doesn't interrupt the flow of the evening, and you can fill in the quiz over the course of the evening. Of course you'd need to find some really difficult questions which would be a lot of hard work....and no doubt there would be some dispute about some of the answers because there's always some smart arse who professes to know absolutely everything and will argue about the spelling of a song title, year of a release, etc etc. But these are my thoughts ... just thought I'd share.

I'd say yes to the karaoke idea.As a matter of fact I love it, sounds like fun.
We have 2 nights to listen and dance to Prince music, 2 nights¡¡¡ When you guys decided to have 2 nights first thought I had was that it was too much for me. Two days listening and dancing to Prince music (same songs over and over again) it is just too much (yes, Im getting old). So I thought I could always make a quiet and calm night out of friday and a funky and danceable night on saturday. You will find me in the first floor on friday just having a quiet chat and coming up and down second floor and basement on saturday. Now that you suggest some alternatives I do go for it. Any entertainment added sounds like a good idea to me.

I stand very much "on the fence" on this, it is very much the job of the compere to make this a tight and fun event, to move the thing on even in those toe curling, excrutiating silences etc, and whip up the audience for appreciation even it doesn't warrant it, but this should be FUN

2 nights¡¡¡ When you guys decided to have 2 nights first thought I had was that it was too much for me. Two days listening and dancing to Prince music (same songs over and over again) it is just too much (yes, Im getting old). u obviously greatly underestimate xactly how much music prince has tucked away in the vaults, and how much of it is in the hands if his fans. the reason 4 holding a 2 day event is because the 1 complaint theres always been at a prince nite is that a particular track wasn't played. now there r 2 nites in a row there is a chance 2 squeeze in twice as many songs as b4. we already increased the party from 1 floor to 3 floors, with 2 dancefloors, so twice as much dance music, so now it's doubled again there is more than enuff prince music 2 hold a week long event on 3 floors with different music and styles each nite without repeating the same tracks every nite. not that this is whats going 2 happen this time, but u could have a nite of the following styles - rap, rnb, rock, 80s, 90s, 00s, related artists, cover versions, live, extended mixes, house/dance mixes, dj only remixes, just playing the hits and well known stuff, just playing the b sides, just playing the non single album tracks, stuff only available from npgmc, just so much stuff. at 1 of the nites last year, i played solely music from the period up2 and including purple rain, and no further, playing the time, vanity, sheila e, sheena easton, and all the revolution era material - without playing the same song twice. similar things can b done by playing material from the parade era, or gold experience/exodus era. this time im planning on only playing the same track once over the weekend, and i think le freak has a similar idea. so if u only come 2 1 nite, ure only going 2 hear half the music. if u come both nites, u won't b bored hearing the same tune repeatedly. it's going 2 b far from a weekend of kiss and 1999 with a finale of purple rain whilst every1 grabs thier coats. it'll b the weekend where ure surprised about how much prince stuff u can dance 2. we have the demographics 2 show what ppl want 2 listen 2 and dance 2, we dont just stick on a song, its a highly scientific method of audio selection 2 make bodies sweat on the dancefloor, according 2 dr funkenstein. we know that some ppl really, really, really want 2 hear certain tracks loud in a club, but they don't normally get played due 2 time constraints. this time u have double the chance 2 hear them. tick tick bang any1?

Thing is, the equipment for the Karaoke will be at the same place as the dancefloor... Is that not so? Because in that case, of course the disco would have to stop while the Karaoke contest goes on. If you could have the karaoke in the basement, that would be different, dancing, singing and quiet chatting could all go on at the same time...
