Anyone going to see Mavis at the Jazz Cafe in Camden tonight?

Not bad for a girl. She did the big tunes from the Staples Singers period (Respect Yourself, Come Go With Me...) A couple of songs from her new album, which I loved enough to want the CD, but nothing from her tenure at Paisley Park, which was a shame. Some guy next to me hollered 'You're Melody Cool!' several times early on, but it seemed she had forgotten.

She's aged quite a bit, but her voice can still give you shivers. Despite her age she was still in full soul sister mode, working the audience, giving an amusing speil regarding Beyonce and the short shelf life of modern divas amongst other anecdotal lead-ins to songs, introducing the band members before their lengthy solos. When she started going on about a good friend of hers, I had faint hopes of at least a mention of Prince, but no, she was on about him upstairs.

Good atmosphere with lots of crowd participation, and Heather Small of M People in attendance (Americans unlikely to know her). I had a good time, but would have really enjoyed loved to hear Time Waits For Noone, at least.
