"better kick ass tommorow nite, kid".

Hi,
I am holding a 'Funk & Soul' - 'SuperBad'. Every Thursdsay nite, 8pm until 1am. @ The Abbey Bar, Petersgate, Stockport, Manchester, UK.

Now, the odd's are stacked against me. Where i live is very closed minded. I really don't think that the funk will go down well at all. Its a real top 40/dance music kinda place. If thats not enough, my boss is giving me the old Billy Sparks talk - "better kick ass tommorow nite, kid..... or else".

This is where u guys can help!

1) Tell me your favourite Funk tracks, maybe limit it to your top five. From this i hope to discover tracks that i - a) had not have considered including into my DJ set - B) remind me of great tracks which i had forgotten to include.

2) Please bear in mind that there will hopefully be people attending who are not into Funk, so consider this in your choices. So please try & give mass appeal in your choices (without selling out!)

3) Please feel free to offer any suggestions and ideas which i could use in regard to any aspect of the night. I have considered silently playing 'blaxplotation' films through a projector againts the wall next to the dance floor. Any other suggestions?

If all else fails we are charging £1 entry on the door and with the flyer u get a free shot of vodka and all bottles and spirits are just £1 all night!

Thanks for the help

If, u are at all interested in attending then org note me!

I've discovered that when you're dealing with folks who are there to party, but aren't totally versed in funk, there is a thin, forgivable, line between funk and disco.

Love Rollercoaster, Get Down Tonight, You Dropped a Bomb On Me, and Stayin Alive. All cheeeeesy disco songs that are thrown on the turntable at retro funk nights, here in Atlanta.

Just putting that out there. Play the cheese and THEN play the authentic funk.

My favorites:

Flashlight
DAZZ by Brick
Give It To Me Baby by Rick James
Tell Me Something Good- Rufus
Thank You Falettin Me blah blah - Sly

Thats a could point. I was debating with a friend the other day as to whether or not we should include any music by 'Chic'. I was of the opinion that we should do so. I know its disco, but its fundamentally funk based. if i sandwhich it between Atomic dogs and say, Brick house then i think introducing some disco into the set may just work if not benifit from it.

Yeah, i hear ya. However, i really dont want to 'sell out' if u know what i mean. I need to find the balance between True funk and More funk inspired music which non funk fans could warm to (i.e the afore mentioned 'disco').

I'm really keen to play Housequake.... but will it jut sound like funky chipmunks to those not hip to funk?

Well, see, here is where you're walking the fine line between entertainment and education.

I think the BEST thing you can do is to play a KILLER funk jam, that only 1/3 of the room knows, and they will all scream and go "OH SNAP! THAT'S MY JAM!", to which, the other 2/3 will scream to their elated friends, "OH? WHAT SONG IS THIS? IT'S COOL! SOUNDS LIKE JAMES BROWN ON HELIUM".

That'd be the goal, if I were you.

Play the full length version of Roger's 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' which lasts for over 10 minutes, 'Dancefloor', 'I Can Make You Dance', 'Doesn't Really Matter', 'More Bounce 2 The Ounce', 'Midnight Hour' (Roger's version), 'So Ruff, So Tuff', 'Maxx Axe'...any Roger & Zapp uptempo/dance track, or 4 slow jams...'Computer Love', 'I Wanna B Ur Man'...

Hope this helps!

I'd also add anything by The Time and Prince's funky trax like 'DMSR', 'Automatic', 'Controversy', 'Private Joy', '1999' etc.
