I'm hardly asleep. I've been designing a web site for a band here in atlanta, ( www.deltamoon.com/june ) unpacking, fixing up this Amityville Horror that I've moved into.

I WISH I had time for music. I look forward to it.

hey otan, how do you do your sites?

Start out with pencil and paper and do rough sketches of where things will go, how things will behave. Think about the end user constantly. What are they looking for at this site? Organize your information that way.

Then go to photoshop and start putting together a rough comp of a single page from the site, to refine the initial design concept. At this point, I'll sometimes take screenshots from other websites and cut and paste parts of their sites into the photoshop file, just as guidelines of things that I like, and then, duuh, be sure to NOT use that original screenshot in the site - it's for inspiration - develop your own site from those pieces of inspiration. (in THIS site's case, some of the visual element were "adapted" from www.soulive.com )

Then start putting the pages together in Dreamweaver, using pieces from the photoshop comp.

THEN start doing all the wacky coding - like the javascript that randomly generates the header image, the javascript that writes out the next three upcoming gigs, (it looks at the list of gigs, and starts with Today, moves forward until three gigs have been written, and then stops). Then do the magic for the calendar, (more javascript, same as the upcoming gigs, except it starts with today and goes until all gigs have been written out) the photo gallery crap, (not too happy with that yet) and stuff.

A site comes together a WHOLE lot faster if you do all the prep work - pencil and paper are the best tools you can use for web design. That, and looking at other people's sites, coming up with ideas, talking to the client to find out what they like, don't like, want, etc. Also be aware of the client's surfing abilities. If they're using an old crap Mac or PC, don't rely on DHTML or Stylesheets too much. In this site, I'm using css stylesheets sparingly... just for font decoration, not to create boxes and layers and crap.

But to be honest, I'm sick of designing sites for people other than myself. The leader of this band is surfing the web on a dialup computer running WINDOWS 98. That's an OS from SIX YEARS AGO. That's the Triassic Period of browsers and platforms. Who knows what I could have accomplished if I weren't designing for Granpa Grig.

i asked this because i study computer science at teh university and I am interested in going further to web design because in my town there's lot of demand and few people who does it. i made a few sites before but all of them sucked and i liked yours. thanks for sharing your methods. biggrin

I love designing web sites. I hate explaining to morons that, if they want the latest technology on their site, they've got to upgrade their stupid computers.

So, really, i'm just not a good "people person".

Slave2daGroove

I've been finishing the upstairs of my house so I can set-up the drum set/congas. This has been every night and weekends for the last 2 weeks.

I've been working on it for 3 years and it's finally done. Just doing some final touch-up to the trim and paint but should be set-up by this weekend.

I've been recording ideas on my zoom for the last year and now will finally be able to record everything for real at my own house. This has never happened before, so I'm really excited with the blank canvas that I can go to at any time of the day or night.

peace

Yeh VinaBlue I'm still using Win98 2nd ed.(cringe),from the 'triassic period'( wink ).
Nice work Otan with the site. No it wasn't 'hammered', came through load & clear.Sweet Band!
Had a good time last night playing live at a pub gig.Was a loose get together of around 10 of us ; individual performances, plus 'The Band' playing at the end . It's been a couple of months since we've got together & gone 'out there'.I was shitting Myself during my set, playing my fender acoustic, with a bridge pickup .Setting up the p.a. then a few minutes getting the sound right. Played some originals, and a Ry Cooder cover, (Title: Everythings gonna work out just fine), which in the end it did.My left hand started cramping after 'bout 3 minutes, then luckily i warmed up and got through, was scary i have to admit. I'd forgotten that U have 2 practice! Then sitting 'round , wandering around ,going through the tracks "PainFactory" were gonna do, unplugged Elec. Git. in the fouyer, once i new i was gonna remember what 2 play i calmed a bit, but woh had a few moments of terror ! We did 'some covers' (Hotel California,Little wing,While my guitar gently..)+ ..., my thing, 'Factoreyes', 12 bar jam in 'E' ; was great 2 play some lead and the guy's & girls sung & played tight.Music's such a love but i went from total "Oh my god" at the start, 2 "wow, that was so relaxing", at the end.Playing live in front of 50 people in a pub, ouch!, from Hell 2 Ecstacy. So easy 2 lose touch, but it was fun guitar eek lol
~PClinuxOS~ yes I've been here longer than I care to remember, ... I drop in from time to time, ... thumbs up!

I've been working on stuff with my new band. We'll probably try to do at least a couple of my originals amidst the sea of covers - any suggestions of which ones? Best Tonight will probably be one fo' sure. First couple of gigs went well. Nothing but kind words from everyone. It's so nice that they drink while we play - we sound so much better that way. Also trying to work out a new acoustic act - we'll see how that goes. I posted the band demo on my Soundclick site. Check it out!

Win98 never was a great platform, or even a good one. The only reason everybody used it (including me confused) is because of M$'s incredible marketing.
But that's just my 2cts wink

The main reason I used it is because it works with all my hardware seemlessly and it don't crash very often. I find it a rather maleable format. I don't like too much ease of use, I have to wonder "What are Microsoft trying 2 hide?"... however my comp is specifically optimised for A/V work.

Hey Erik:

D'OH!!!

I still use windows 98! LOL! lol

It works better with my gear than Win ME or XP... of course, the only setback is the "Blue Screen of Death" that happens every once in a blue moon...

But running Sonar 2.0 on Windows 98 has all the throughput I need... and running on a 2.2 Ghz machine with 1 Gig of RAM, it delivers enough processing power that I can run damn near unlimited effects processors on well over 48 tracks. (I've never used more than 48 tracks so far, but I suspect I could probably go a lot more before I started getting drop-outs).
