Could you be more specific regarding what section of the tune you're concerned with (ex. during second chorus, after 3rd verse, etc.) as there are slight variations in the patterns. Also, there are different inversions of an Am7 chord being used in the left and right channels.

i don't play guitar, but i do have perfect pitch. sounds to me like an A minor 7 with the E and G (which is the 7th) alternating back and forth. and then G A C A (notes) the first time round, and then G A C G A C (notes) second time through.

From one semi-dumb guitarist to one who is "classicaly trained":

As I said earlier, there are two different parts being played in the left vs right channels.

Channel one: basically an octave with 4th in the middle
G/C/G (G string, 12th fret/B string, 13th fret/E string, 15th fret)

Channel two: moving 2 note pattern
C/A (E string, 8th fret/B string, 10th fret)
G/E (E string, 3rd fret/B string, 5th fret)
A/E (E string, 5th fret/B string, 5th fret)

As there is currently no I,C,P&C music to "read", that's what I "hear".
The rhythm should be obvious.

Btw, Wes Montgomery, Erroll Garner, George Benson and Jimmy Smith (among others) played by ear. I can only hope that my playing could be as "dumb" as theirs.

Developing a good ear is widely reguarded as being the most important part in music development.

Heres a little peice of an article from Steve Vai

"Your ears are the most important thing to develop, more than technique, more than chops, more than knowing theory, more than anything. There are a lot of great players who don't know anything about scales or chords they just know what sounds good.
"From developing your ear comes the connection between your inner ear and your heart, your soul and the notes that come out of your instrument.Take someone like Wes Montgomery;if you ask him to play an Am7b5 chord he wouldn't have a clue what you're talking about, but once he'd heard it he'd be able to play it like he's always known the chord. These guys pick up whatever they hear immediatley."

I think that speaks for its self really.

I was gonna go into that one, as a drum teacher, I can tell you that theory just helps you understand it all better, its your ears & your soul that truely make good music wink

Well I play guitar and theory is very usefull as it helps you understand the language of music like why things work and so on,instead of figuring every last thing out yourself over years other musicians have documented there progress in what effect has become theory. But I struggle to think how someone could be that good of a musician without a good ear for figuring out what sounds good, sometimes you get music and it isnt always printed correctly or whatever and you would end up playing it wrong as a result. Also if there is no availible music books for the required peice you wish to play how will you go about it,this is how music is written often musicians work it out by ear transcribe it into notation for books magazines etc. I would also like to add that people that boast about being great at playing this or that generally aint.

Yep, that's good old Chronic. That pic was in his profile when he was just thechronic here.

I think it's funny that we hear brag/brag/brag and put down after put down from Chronic, yet no music, ever.

Sytles is the king of self-taught/play by ear musicians on this site. worship

I wonder when we will get to hear Chronic's music?

What exactly is classically trained I'm unsure. What is the concept of it and how does it not involve using your ears ,is it purely reading notataion and nothing else,if so I'd want my money back. I mean in some of the theory I've learned say intervals for example you learn to recognise how many steps apart the notes are,if you didnt use your ears how would you do this. How could you tell if a chord was major minor etc,all the books in the world in going to teach you that stuff.
