Have a look at Reason for drums and midi stuff and cubase for recording vocals and stuff.

you may wish to give tracktion a look. quite cost effective, and yet computer magazine recommended it right along cubase and sonar. i have not used sonar in months since becoming hip to tracktion.

reason and cubase combined, I agree.
However it would be even better to get an Akai MPC sampler/sequencer, a piece of hardware that's very intuitive and is used by lost and lots of great rnb and hip hop producers...
