what would u do to get your music 2 TOP MUSIC EXECUTIVE in the industry?
1. write songs 2. record songs 3. put them out on my own label 4. play shows in my own region and build a following 5. promote 6. repeat basically show them that i don't need them. face it, the days of owen husney taking prince around to the labels are over because artist development doesn't happen in todays day and age. once you've sold 10,000 cd's on your own, THEN they'll be comin to you. if you've got a connection, more power to ya, but ask yourself if you're ready for that. my 2 cents!

also, think about what kind of a deal a major label would give you with little experience! i certainly wouldn't sign that CONtract. think about this (paraphrased from an article found here: http://www.openupandsay.c...=20021203) Here are some perspectives: For most artists to think that they can be on a major label, is like a sixteen–year–old hostess at a restaurant wanting to open her own 1,000–seat restaurant in Manhattan; Forget the fact that she only has worked as a hostess (the only job she ever had) for three months. Now, if the person seeking the ten–million dollar bank loan had been a twenty–year food–service veteran, having worked as hostess, waitress, cook, bartender, head chef, assistant and general manager, well then, you might actually listen. But the real answer for the sixteen–year–old hostess is the answer for the grassroots indie artist: Why are you wasting your time focusing on things that are so high level that they do not apply to you? They may apply to other people in larger marketing situations, but not to you at your level. The real reason that the sixteen–year–old hostess cannot get the restaurant loan (and thus cannot "move forward") is that she knows almost nothing about the restaurant business. She knows so little, as a matter of fact, that she does not even know what she does not know. But the bank knows, for a fact, that she has no chance of success, so they don't even talk to her.

All of us on here have talent and he has none...but at least he on tv. If i was him and it was me up there, I'd be putting my beats all over the place and be wanting 2 produce songs and meet other artists just like the rest of us. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

Not that I've ever succeeded in doing so but this confirms what I've heard as well and it seems consistent with the stories of people who *have* made it. Labels are not creative or adventurous anymore. Show them you don't *need* them and then they'll be all over you. Just like a bank. They all want to give you credit when you don't need it. When you're down and out? No one will give you the time of day. I think thats a good way to think of record labels- akin to banks. They all want a "sure thing", or at least they aren't interested in untested, high risk things. They are very conservative and risk averse.

If anything I'd love to know what kind of deal Tori Amos and Bjork have. They seem to have a good balance as far as creativity and exposure goes.

[This message was edited Mon Apr 26 9:29:04 2004 by ElectricPurple] Two words: Joss Stone. Sure, you'll be seeing her at a mall grand opening in 10 years signing autographs, but who cares. I would have preferred to get in and get out before 20. Now that I'm almost double that, i got me NO aspirations whatsoever. Well, shit i wont lie. I DO have aspirations. Put out my own record. Sell twenty copies. [This message was edited Mon Apr 26 11:59:24 2004 by otan] The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

The top music executive in the industry can just suck my balls, pardon my french. Let them sell Backstreet Boys records, I'm just not interested in all that BS. I'll be in some shitty club playing my ass off for 40 people doing exactly what I wanna do and nothing else and loving it.

This is exactly how I feel. My goal is this: live the life. Write songs, make records, rehearse a band, play gigs, sell a couple records, make t-shirts, have a website, etc. Honestly I get to do everything my heros (like Prince) get to do. Just on a vastly smaller scale. And that's OK. There is only so much room in the world for rock stars. When you step on stage and tell your story- play your music- what does it matter how many people are in the room with you? One warm body and its worth doing. That's my opinion. Communication is communication. Its not up to us what scale we work at. That is up to fate/God/whatever you want to call it. All we do by complaining is suck the joy out of it for ourselves. I have stopped doing that. Now I just do what I do and let the pieces fall where they may. And I'll be damned if I'm not more successful than I've ever been. Still nowhere near making a living but it perpetuates itself. Good enough for me, really!!

thanks everyone for taking part in this question air.
we kinda of figured that there may b one or so artists out there who would love to get a there dreams of making it BIG TIME closer to a reality.... U ever see that Jessica Simpson driven special on VH1... where after they worked so hard to get noticed and was let down here and there then she got the chance to sing in the office of Tommy motola and he listen to her sing and after wards he said something like "we would like to have u as a part of our family".. then she just cried, because all of the hard work paid off... and now she is JESSICA SIMPSON, and for some of u she is just jessica simpson, but to jessica she is that 16 year old girl who DREAMED BIG and in the end.. Her dream became real... IN A BIG way. u see not all of us "artist" strive to just play local clubs, and sell our cds on the internet. Some of Us " artist " dream getting our voices and our talent around the world, u know like of being on mtv, mtv2, vh1, bet, and so on.... doing concerts all over the world, bringing joy to a great mulitude of people... some of us "artist" DREAM BIG.... for gods sake... prince himself with the help of a Major label is getting UNBELIEVable exposure. sure he was doing his thing on the net... and now his internet club has so many more members where they can get what they would have not known existed otherwise. so 2 those of you who don't dream that BIG no harm no foul. yet 2 that ONE and you know who u are.... DREAM BIG dream VERY BIG. because dreams come true. and if there is anything we The DownLoad Society can do anything to help that BIG DREAM become REAL.... please feel free to drop us a Note in our org notes. And let the Electric Purple Strike 4 U. 4 the ONE with Big Dreams, The DownLoad Society [This message was edited Tue Apr 27 18:27:29 2004 by ElectricPurple]

one more thing....
the MOST important thing U should do... In our (The DownLoad Society) opinion, is just believe... believe in yourself, believe in your dream, and believe that dreams do come true. and believe in God (he, she, it, them, so on and so on) because God works wonders for those who believe. much love Electric Purple, Prince @ The DownLoad Society

i do dream very big, but there's a couple ways to look at it. some people may keep doing what they're doing in the hope that maybe, just MAYBE, (if they have a great voice, killer body and big enough boobs), they'll meet someone who COULD take them into tommy matolas office and if he's in a good mood, MAYBE he'll offer them a record contract (heavily biased in favor of the record company of course). **OR** if, like me, you are tired of getting hopes up and leading nowhere, you could take matters into your own hands and start making your own steps toward success so that when you do meet a top exec, you'll be that much more prepared. do you think michael dell sat around hoping bill gates would call? NO, he started dell computers in his college dorm room! electricpurple, i'm not trying to discourage anyone, just giving a reality check. when you say things like "we can get your music to the top music exec", well, you sound like a b-movie producer hitting on teenage girls at the beach. c'mere kid, i'm gonna make you a STAR! if you've got a connection, great, more power to ya, but i've been there, i've ridden an elevator with clive davis, my songs have been on the radio. i'm using my small steps to prop myself up to the bigger ones. this is why i have a great attitude, because i'm here to tell folks they CAN do it. but the harder they work, the "luckier" they'll get.

For the record I still dream BIG. Hell I was just on stage w/ Prince in front of 14,000 people. How can I NOT walk away from that wanting it for myself? I can't speak for Otan but I bet if the opportunity presented itself for him to make a living and tour the world with his music he would go for it as well. I know I would. As much as my wife and family would like me to say otherwise they know the truth in their hearts so they've quit asking- if I get my chance I will throw everything to the wind and go for it without a moment's hesitation. So my comments were not about DREAMS. We all dream pretty much the same dreams. My comments are about REALITY and enjoying what we DO have rather than killing that joy by complaining about what we DON'T. Its about being happy with your life WHERE YOU ARE. I have seen so many people who would " just be happy if" XYZ happened. They do incredible things and yet they never seem to feel any joy from it. God (IMO) wants us to be happy, joyous and free always. Both on the way "up" and on the way "down". Its all a matter of your attitude! That's all I'm saying. Dream the dreams. Be realistic. Enjoy every moment. Share the love. That's my philosophy.
