Hell and Ecstasy - new song.

http://www.funkmusician.c...cstasy.mp3 - the file is 10 megs cuz I made the mp3 at 360kbps (just to compare against another version up on soundclick. and well, yeah, it does sound clearer.)

Well. This is the heavy stuff. Very little to funk around with... tho is does get groovy in spots, it's hard to lay in a groove on 3/4, or is this 6/8? 12/16? I dunno. Count to 4 and then to two again.

UNH! Somebody here compared it to Gish because of the slow building groove in the middle. That works for me.

Like that tune alot. Has a great raw open vibe to it, much the same way I like to record my noise. What amp are you running , really nice tones.

HAH! Sounds like miked amps dont it?

It's direct into the Zoom MRS1044 multi track. I'm messing with some new guitar settings I've found, instead of always jumping on the marshall tone. This one has all sorts of extras, like cabinet and speaker selection, speaker cabinet DEPTH! And lastly, I rolled the high end off the eq, which de-emphasizes the "digitality" of it all. Unfortunately, it also smothered my wail-fest solo.

But that's cool.

hey - YM - what kinda time sig is this? I always thought it was 6/8, but when I do a 6/8 number with the blues band, it's some kinda double-speed jazz swing thing. This is just more like an angry waltz or something.

D'you know what it is?

If you don't mind my butting in, going by the phrasing of the intro vs. the verse:
Intro = 12/8 (or 3 bars of 4 instead of a standard 4 bar phrase. 1234,2234,3234 and back to 1 )
Verse = 6/8

That's sounds like the easiest way to count it.

The thing you do with your blues band is probably considered a 6/8 swing or shuffle.

Technology is getting crazy, the POD XT clips I have heard as of late are getting mighty hard to tell the difference with. Sure saves time... All the more impressive tone you got goin.

I've got the POD XT in the studio, and it does sound great. but for some reason most musicians will pick the real amps when recording.

They all have that phflllfff kind of underlying tone - specially the full chords. Maybe in a few more years, it'll sound like an amp in a room, set on stun. But for now, they still lack full impact of a real amp (SS OR Tube).

I like how you created a good song with a weird rhythm smile
Most of the time these kind of things tend to sound so unnatural, like 'hey, listen how we play something in 7/8!' or something. Here it sounds very natural.

What I didn't like too much was the mix. I mean, it sounds good and clear, you can hear everything okay but it lacks a bit of punch imo. I would turn up the guitars and bass a bit and have less reverb on the drums, especially the snare sounds too 'hi-fi' and 'reverby' (that's not english, is it? wink ). Maybe a lower tuned, deeper snare. Maybe some 'pumping' compression on the whole mix even (I like that pumping sound of drums suppressing the bass and guitars a bit).
But I'm starting to ramble now nuts, and of course it's just a matter of taste.

Apart from the critique on the mix, I think it's a cool original song! I'm going to hear some more stuff from your soundclicks page.

I really like this song! I'm kind of feelin that groove, man! I dig your guitar chops, too. You might consider punching up the bass on the toms a bit just to give it a rumbling/rolling feel. Yeah, yeah... fuck Julian and his advice column. I know. hehe.

FYI... it's in 6/8.

Sometimes, I like to mess around with odd meters (too many years of marching band drum lines, I suppose).

Toward the end of my song, "What U Say", I break off into a jazzy 7/8 meter, and throw in a little lick in from Maurice Ravel's "Bolero" on the piano. hehe. Just to throw a muhfugga off.

Cool song Beau! It kinda reminds me of Mother Love Bone or Black Crows, something like that. Kinda grungy, but soulful.

Hey,, this song is great! very good, i liked it very very much. I just think that ALL the instruments should have been mixed louder compared to the voice, and the guitar sound should have been brighter, it's kinda muddy, but the song itself is great, i wish i could write songs like this. But i think it's needs some changes in the way it sounds to be an effective rock track, it stills sounds like a rock attemp from a funky funky man

Different direction. Versatile styles. Kind of felt some early Allman Bros. there...way back...like Eat A Peach. Maybe even raw John Mayall.
