Musicology: let us study this, shall we

Get it: mms://wm.sony.global.spee...ll_300.wmv

Let's talk about this "Old School Joint for the True Funk SOUL-diers"

The funk elements are there, yeah. But lyrically, this song really does put your heart back into musicianship. I'm loving it. I would hope that a single will come out with a much more extended version where the musicianship is showcased more.

Visually, the video is way cool with the depiction of the child riding his bike with the ace of spades in the spokes going to the old "mom and pop" record store, where you see the hand-drawn sign that says you get a free 45 with every concert ticket. The old man behind the counter... Ah... the good 'ol days...

Flash-forward. The kid playing the 45 back again learning the song on his guitar. You see a picture of Jimi taped to the inside of his record player. Singing into the neck of the vacuume cleaner.. Right on!

Forward to the show.
You see some "hip-hop dressed" kids sportin' outside trying to get in to see the show. Not a chance! Remember when you dressed up to go see a show? (The term: "2 the 9's", ask your grandmother what that meant) The guys in the sharp suits are let in without question.

The father, busting in the kid's bed-room reclaiming his LPs. Good one. Then taking him to the concert, putting him on his shoulders to see prince. Got me all misty. I will definitely be heavily involved with my son's knowledge of music. Notice all the old school posters in the kids bed room. Great visual. Too bad most kids of this generation wouldn't even recognize one of them. But that's part of the message, right?

Then the funk hits! The song shifts gear and has you on you feet. The old school tap-dancing is hot. One question though. What's up with the guards in the riot gear? The new funk soldiers? And just when you are ready to "keep the party moving", it's over... I don't think so! Prince, this better just be a "James Brown like part 1". Fun and funky groove, but I felt only "teased" in the end.

Good song.
Good video.
Great message...

Take your pick: Turn-table or a band?

Yomama, you kick ass, this is awesome and the first time I've heard the tune.

The message is strong and real but I think it may go over most people's heads (not musicians or the NFO). With all of the little hints, references to Sly/James, it's gotta get through to the masses, especially with a video.

Live music is where it's at (Otan come back to the funk) and I'm as giddy as a school girl to see Prince promoting that fact. I've been feeling/saying it for years but it takes musical ability; will it inspire a new group of artists or are the masses to far gone?

I guess I'll see when our little purple friend comes to town and how well his newly inked Sony deal pans out.

Thanks again Yomama

Slave, you are definitely right about musicians being able to appreciate this song more-so than your average orger. I don't think this is a strong single: musically or commercially. But the message is enough that it should be dispersed to the masses.
