Jshua--Night Sessions pt. 2 New MP3's...

Hey Everyone!

Sorry I've been absent as of late but life has been hectic with a capital H! nod
But its nice to be back on the board!
and I know I've got some catching up to do...smile

I'm still recording some basic tracks and here's a couple of em'

http://www.soundclick.com/jshua (click on MP3's)

1. Been There and Gone..

Keeping in the spirit of freedom, here's some Rawk!
Its basically a power pop thang...
and its even got some of that good ol' 80's cheese!!!!!
did this one Thursday night

2. How Can I?
Its a tear jearker...
I'm gonna add strings to this one and do some more polishing
but its not bad for the 1st session....smile
Did this one Wednesday night

I apologize for the rough mixes in advance but it ain't easy getting a rough mix
at the end of the nite---y'all know what I mean.....smile

Wow! 5 hours of sleep in 2 days--I'm not only fried, but I'm back at work! lol

ok, I'm gonna go collapse now....

Hope you enjoy! Please let me know what you think!

peace

Oh - edit:
FIRST!!!!!

Been There and Gone - excellent!
Push the dynamics even harder - start out with just one guitar and the vocals, and then push the heavy distorted guitar on the chorus - it's all the rage these days with your Blinks and Greens and other pop-punk bands. You'll OWN then with this song.

I love the break on the solo! Great work man. I hate my life!

How Can I?
Where's my bic lighter! Great job man. I'd suggest going against the obvious choice (strings) and maybe try for something different - like 2 flutes and a viola combo or something like that - more of a Baroque touch instead of an American Idol feel... just a thought on how to distinguish this from every other pop ballad out there.

I feel like a junkie who just got a fix. I really like Been There and Gone. Is it me or do I hear a riff from Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad? thumbs up! How Can I? sounds like the basics of a Stevie Wonder piano ballad...almost in the tradition of You and I. I'd really like to hear this one with strings, piano, voice and a guitar solo.

Hey Otan!

First off: Thanx for listening!
Yeah, I think I am gonna do just that with the guitars on "Been There and Gone..."
And I definitely glad you dig the break on the solo--I was thinking about putting a cowbell there and then I thought...."naaaah!" smile
I kinda dig it as is..

And belive it or not, I am working on a string arrangement for "How can I?"
I do like the idea of a Baroque touch!
The main problem I'm gonna have with this one is that "How can I" is a part of the second CD, which is the concept album side and it introduces one of the main themes that will recurr as the album progresses---that being where the guitar kicks in. Yeah, I'm definitely trying to distinguish it from every other ballad out there and hopefully the twists and turns I have going on it will help..smile

Psykosoul! What is up Brotha?! smile

Thanx for the shout out and ironically enoughI was just ready to lay some new stuff on ya' when you sent me the note...

Yeah, you caught me bro, I couldn't resist doing that little tag line at the end of "Been There and Gone"....
I figured that since I was doing a sort of power pop thing in the first place and giving a nod out to the 80's, why not? smile I knew you'd catch it!

and "How Can I?", when its finished, will pretty much be like you're imagining it to be!
I'm just trying to (hopefully) distinguish it a little from everything else....Thanx for the compliment!

Man, I've got a lot of catching up to do!

I'm gonna check you're stuff out tonight!

WEll you did it again! Your Rough mixes sound better than anything I could mix on a good day!
Where to start:

Been There and Gone-Unfortunately it's my least favorite of the two(even though I like them both)I just feel like when the mix is cleared up I will like it better...I think the reason I didn't fall in love with is because the guitars seemed a little too loud and I'm in my "super loud music gives me a migraine" stage in my life,so that's the only thing I wasn't really feeling. But I was really excited when you added the riff from Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad at the end, that's my favorite part of that song!Especially the part where P doubles the guitars at the end.Overall though, your song is is nice.

How Can I- I've got another Jam to memorize! I really like this one, but I have a question, have you ever thought of adding a Harpsichord or a Clavichord to a song, kind of a "Queen" thing? Just a suggestion, not really for this song but in general. Good Job!

Nikki!

Hey! I'm sorry, that's my bad--I've been running around like crazy!
I've been online a few times but I haven't seen you up!
I guess we're just missing each other right now but I'll keep looking out for ya' smile

I agree that the middle section in "How Can I?" needs to be really dramatic and I'm trying to figure out what should be there----the idea of a Clavachord or Harpsichord is really intriguing...
I'm gonna give it a shot and see how it turns out!

and yeah, I couldn't resist putting that little musical pun on "Been There and Gone" guitar

BTW, are you making any music these days or are you still involved in your project?

Ok, 'been there...' - sounds very TTD musically and backing vox. Sounds like it could also be in a Broadway show or even in the movie Graffiti Bridge. Love the solo and brief interlude thingie. Sort of a Lenny vibe, too.

'how can I?' - let me put this Kleenex away for a sec. Ok, this sounds like it's from a play, too. Am I crazy? Just imagine the protagonist walking around the darkened stage, spotlight shining on him singing this. How about a nice fluglehorn solo in the middle a la Burt Bacharach? Seriously! I swear I didn't drink tonight or smoke crack, either. Please don't take this as an insult because you know I think you're a talented mofo!

Hey Artist 08!

Dude, you've actually hit the nail on the head! smile

Both of these songs are gonna be on my second disc which is the "concept album" disc....
so, yeah---these tunes are a part of my soundplay, if you will and I'm adding all kinds of touches to these songs, so what you're hearing is the bare bones basic tracks....I think its going to end up being like a Dark side of the moon meets Tommy meets Grafitti Bridge meets Abbey Road (side 2) meets.....confuse

Let's just say, I've got a lot of the canvas finished and I'm starting to piece the rest of the puzzle together...

Thanx for the shout! I just got back in to town this morning, so I'm gonna check out your stuff right now!

Been There and Gone reminds me of Prince's rock stuff, like So Far, So Pleased. Groovy track, I like the changes, and the keyboards of course. I also hear the TTD comparison now that Artist08 pointed it out.

How Can I? I agree with everyone elses suggestion to try something other than strings. But it does sound pretty cool on it's own. Great arrangement. You amaze me with how much you know about changes and fills in all these different genres. You really have all bases covered.

Damn. worship

It's been a while and it may have not even gone through. Just in case you didn't get it. Welcome 2 Life is embedded into my brain. You have written the perfect song. Not only do I hear it but I feel it. Biking, loading the dishwasher or whatever, this tune is always with me. With having it on the brain so much, I'm now vocalizing club/electronic mixes and I would like to feature the original with remixes on my label. I think a non-exclusive license would be appropriate and this means that the original track remains yours. With that, you are free to license it to any other label at any time. Whatever remixes we feature would be the property of MDEX, my label, but they would be open for licensing as well.

So here's the scenario...
You're picked up by hmmm let's say Geffen. Geffen wants to release Welcome 2 Life. You would have complete control of that deal AND I would comply with any requests or conditions, even if it means that I have to discontinue featuring the original rock version on MDEX. I know that house/club and electronic is not really your thing so I don't want to lock the original to my label with an exclusive deal when there are other labels out there that are more into what you are doing. Consider my label a stepping stone. I'm passionate about this tune and I will do everything in my power to get it heard. I think remixes in multiple genres would surely get the buzz going.

Lastly, I will give you the final thumbs up on remixes. It bugs me when artists have product on the market that they are unhappy with. I mean... what's the point? Even if it means that you hate all remixes and I press this track as a one sided 5m25s release, I would do it.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Marc

PP4, Thanx Bro!

but honestly, I don't consider myself a musician (as strange as that may sound)...smile
All I know is that I get something complete in my head and I do my best to bring it to light as the creator intended it....
Honestly, I'm always pleasantly surprised by what comes out of this process...

Btw, I think psychosoul is on your idea for backup on your song but I'm still here to help, if needed...

Wow, you just come with all the colors of the rainbow. How can I has this lovely raw open sound. Love the guitar line on the lead. Great natural drum vibe. Your vocals as always are placed so well.

The solo break on the rock tune actually reminds me of Hendrix Cry of Love type stuff. I am a sucker for some good wah and dug how you laid it down.

Enjoyed em both!! Love HOW CAN I!

1. Been There and Gone.. : This is not really my type of music, but I am amazed that you pull it off in so many genres of music! I like the solo break: just like Kevlar said, Cry Of Love sound...

2. How Can I? : This again ain't really my cup of tea (you know I'm a sucker for the funk), but classy music nevertheless. I wish I had your skills as a musician...

Gotta agree with Marc, your song Welcome 2 Life is a killer track that certainly deserves a release! Love the song, great songwriting, very catchy chorus, good lyrics. And I love that guitar break at the end of the chorus!

I tried to imagine making a dance version of this song, but I seriously haven't got a clue how anyone could pull that off, the song is so complex AND has a 6/8 beat! I really wonder how ya planning to work that out, Marc? What type of beat would you use? And what about the guitarbreak? I'm very curious to know what you hear in your mind and how you plan to translate this song into a dance track. Let me know...

Hey Kevlar!

Thanx man! smile

I'm definitely trying to arrange something different with "How Can I?" and the guitar lead right in the middle is one of the main themes in my concept album disc---gotta tell ya', I've been carrying that one around in my head for months! So its nice to finnaly hear it with my ears...

Also, thanx for the nod on "Been there and Gone"---Hendrix was the first guitarist I seriously got into, primarily because he was left handed and played the guitar upside down. Since I'm left handed also, it just seemed like a good point of reference (even though I play upside down and don't re-string the guitar or bass)

Yeah man---its kinda wild because I'm completely self taught on all of the instruments I play...
I know keys, some scales and a little bit of theory but other than that, all my chords are made up...

It gets a little crazy when I play for a real guitarist (for example) one of my songs--they just look at me like I have 3 heads....lol But honestly, I find it easier for me because, at the very least, I can buy any regular (right handed) guitar straight off the shelf and then just turn it upside down and play....smile
