Which digital recorder??

Looking for some thoughts, I am wanting to pickup a stand alone 16 track recorder in the 1000 to 1500 range ( used is very much an option) I just sold my Fostex VF 160, just too much stuff it doesn't do well. Not looking for every gizmo in the world but something that does it well enough to develop some solid ideas with. I don't have the PC set up at home to mess with it..

A couple models
The Roland 1824
korg D1600 MK II
Boss new 16 track recorder
Tascam new 24 track

Any thoughts greatly appreciated...

The more I look into it, the more the Tascam 2488 looks too good to be true. I think the key though is that you'll need more outboard gear - no guitar amp emulator, no vocal preamp - it's just a 24 track digital recorder for very very very very cheap. Did I mention that it's unbelieveably cheap? I'm SOOOOO ready to buy this thing until I do the math on how many songs I've actually written/recorded this year, so far. - 4? 5? So, when I become more prolific, and require more tracks, then I'll buy the Tascam. until then, I'm sticking with my Zoom.

I mean, really, if you record at home, by yourself, how many tracks do you REALLY need? 16 seems to be too many unless you're recording live drums. And a horn section. And a choir.

I definately will be tracking live drums, I do lots of room mics so only 4 tracks would be used for drums. I mic my amps too, I just can't go direct with the cool heads I have sitting around. I have the same thought with the Tascam, at that price point there has to be some stuff missing, which is exactly why I am selling the VF 160. The onboard FX and mastering sucks.

It is soo hard to know what does what....

Heavenly

Sound wise, I'd go with either Roland or Tascam.
but I think Roland will do you better, because it has everything inside, unlike the Tascam, which only has Line in and that's about it. No pre-amps, and I'm not sure if it has any effects in it. it's simply a multi track, unlike the Roland, which is a complete portable studio.

Hey Thanks,

The prices are pretty decent on the 1824 on ebay...
