Hypothetical Q : IF prince never played guitar again

Which guitar player out there do you think could walk in to the band and cover for all his stuff? I'm talking about his funky rhythm, crazy leads, jazzier stuff and all.

I'll kick off with my top 3 choices...

1. Kevin Eubanks - great all-rounder and great technical ability
2. Jesse Johnson: well trained in the "Prince arts"
3. Vernon Reid: lots of funked up jazz fusion chops
4. John Frusciante - damn funky too

oops, that 4, but it's not easy finding a replacement...and it NEVER happens!! even though it's cool to see him on keys from tire to time as well

Frusciante is not proficient and versatile enough. He do is funky, but i canĀ“t imagine him playing the guitar solo of the ride for example, he is not near Prince on lead guitar.

But guys like Dave Navarro, Nuno bettencourt and vernon reid would do a great job IMO.

Allen Cato. Played guitar with Meshell, son of Sly Stone's guitarist. The man is badass. Seen him live twice - he's WAY versatile (played with Meshell. Hello?) got it in his veins. Can swing from deep soulternative to heavy rock in the blink of an eye.

Vernon couldn't do prince. He's too hyper. Satriani can't stop playing - he HAS to show off. It's boring. Go listen to Prince - the man is amazing on guitar - and probably his biggest strength is knowing when NOT to play. Vernon and Satriani sorely lack that discipline.

You're going to have to dig deeper than mainstream guitar heroes to find someone that can do what prince does.

Well.

Except, maybe, WENDY MELVOIN. But that would be cheating on this test, right?

7salles : Actually, Wendy's not a bad chice - don't forget her arpeggios on Computer Blue, she well trained technically, and shares a lot of Prince's sound...hmmm but good call on Dave Navarro - though he's already taken Prince's place in one area, I doubt he'd let him take his place on his real beloved!

Otan: Yeah...maybe Vernon would be too hyper..probably wouldn't know when to stop! I gotta check out this Allen Cato

But those arpeggios are easy, prince has lots of more difficult licks than that. It's difficult compared to other wendy's lead guitar licks, but that's not hard to do, ltos of folks here on the org can play that I am sure.

I thought I'd chime in on this thread. C'mon give Vernon & Satch a break! Both have been side
men in other acts band, Vernon with Kashif in the early 80's and Satriani toured with Mick Jagger in the late 80's. I think that whole Vernon-Hyper , Satch the show off, are some pretty wide generalizations when you consider that both guitarist have pretty broad musical vocabularies. Besides, these guys are professionals and I'm sure they would could be able to adapt to any musical situation they'd in.

Reallistically speaking what would be the chances of any "high-profile" guitarist being part of Princes band? I would personally rather see a really gifted unknown in the spot anyway.

cool Peace-out cool

Frusciante is about as funky as Hank B. Marvin.

Any of the guys from P-Funk (Garry Shider, BlackByrd, Kidd Funkadelic) could save the day.
