Instrumental Pieces I've been wanting to share some of my older stuff with you guys. This is the kind of stuff I used to write before I could incorporate my lyrics into my music. I started out writing instrumental pieces that were more in the New Age/ Film Score genres.
East (c) 1994 I wrote this in college while taking Electronic Music courses. People would tell me my music didn't sound like it was sequenced or electronic at all. Let me know what you think of this, I have plenty more to share. In the Dirt (c) 2000 This is something I came up with one night. I haven't gone back to develop it any further. I'm refraining from starting more stuff so I can finish polishing up what I've got for my first album. I miss moments like this, when you get a baseline, a melody and the start of a new journey. http://www.soundclick.com...emusic.htm [This message was edited Thu Feb 12 20:14:40 PST 2004 by VinaBlue]

East - it is PERFECT for a score for a musical walkthrough! This sounds very theater and at first..i was imagining myself walking along the Siberian deserts or something like that.
In The Dirt - It is a sad tune. The bass always sounds real! I remember u saying that u dont play it but that keyboard u got has it good! Better than mine! Or is it real bass? I swear it is this time! Straight Jacket Funk Affair

If anyone knows that movie, the scene when Alec rides The Black for the first time, and all you see is the horses feet underwater... I love the music in that part. Very eastern. In the Dirt. I love this baseline. That's me playing on the Korg!

These are tight! East sounds like it could either be in a gangster movie,or Sex and the City...I know there complete opposites, but somehow they fit both of them to me.
In The Dirt sounds like one of those scenes where someone is driving on a highway in the middle of the night trying to get away from somebody or something. Those are total movie scores, make you visualize things. I love them.

Thanks Nikki! It's cool how music can be very visual, even without words, huh?

Hey Vina!

Dirt doesn't do that much to me, to be honest. East though is a different story, very beautiful, nice sounds, I like the whole arrangement with the strings and stuff. I didn't know you had quality stuff like this collecting dust in your own private vault, LOL!
East = very tight! And Marc is right, this is stuff you could shop to movie studios... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Cool stuff Vina! I was gonna ask if you played bass but then I saw you message. That reminds me that for the track I'm working on, I'm playing 'synth solos' with my guitar!!! I have a great effect I found coming from my unit that gives square wave or something, I dunno the technicals, but it sounds synthy to me! Which is good, as I cant play keys .
Do you think you'll get back to doing more pieces like these? Listening to these two pieces, you definitely have a great knack for conjuring up images with music. ..... BULLSEYE!

Gotta make them mp3s, because these are all mainly midi right now. I'll post some more soon. I didn't realize that these pieces have two of my favorite baselines by me. I like that people ask if that's a real bass.

Lately I've tried to keep myself from writing little tidbits like this. I want to complete the songs I want on my first album, however I know I can put lots of segues in between songs using this stuff. I have more I can't wait to share. Some of this stuff I just LOVE, because it takes me so many places.

I'm never one to say I don't like a style of music. It's more that, I don't get it.
This stuff is in that genre. The sounds are cool, the music is cool, but it just sails over my head... VERY sparse electronica like a (an?) 1982 Eurhythmics instrumental or something... that's the best I can come up with. I'm so spaced out and limited in my ability to follow open-ended instrumentals. So - it sounds cool but just sails past me. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

I don't even know how to take your post Otan! I think that is a compliment in disguise, lol. So many peeps here have instrumentals: Psykosoul, Big Thing, Cloud, PP4... Is it because they don't repeat and have no structure? I must have ADD or something, because when things are too repetitive I get really bored.

I would also think about shopping these to video game companies too. Not games like Pac-Man, but games in the vein of Mortal Kombat, warrior games etc. Sounds good to me

I've thought of that as well. Meaning I heard about it once in college and thought, hmm that would be a cool way to make money and be creative. I don't play video games that often to know what kind of stuff they would be looking for though. You guys got me thinking. I'm sure I can put together some kind of demo. I don't know why I hadn't thought about this seriously before. I've got lots of stuff like this...

That's all I'm saying. It's a good thing. Yeah, they're more R&B, but I've never thought of my stuff as New Wave, not that instrumental stuff. I guess it's just music to me. I've never thought of what genre it would fall under, and didn't worry about how it would start and end. I just followed my instincts. It's interesting that it would come across as New Wave. I guess that is just the sound that is embeded in me. Or, maybe I've been smoking too much.

I like both of them, but I prefer 'In the Dirt'. The bass has got a really cool hypnotic effect to it.
Reminds me a bit of Nightmares on Wax.
