I met James Brown's Daughter at a gig!

We played Augusta, GA on Friday night. The owners came up and said James Brown's daughter was in the crowd and wanted to come up to sing a song.

Now, this was a SEEDY blues bar in the SEEDY side of Augusta, at 12:45, on a Friday. Forgive me for being a bit suspicious that JB's daughter would haunt blues bars after midnight in Augusta.

WORSE than that, this girl looked like she was (MAYBE) one step above homeless. A worn out cast on one foot, bandages around one hand, ragged clothes, and, she was bathed in some severe perfume that hardly covered the wafty aroma of a person who has less than a nodding acquaintance with soap. I mean to say, I'm sorry, this woman looked, talked, acted and smelled like a homeless person.

But, to Lola's credit, she welcomed the girl up like royalty and asked her what she wanted to sing.

AS SOON AS THIS GIRL opened her mouth, there was no doubt in my mind. She has the JB underbite, the huge choppers, the eyes - this girl didn't so much as look like JB as just, I don't know, WAS JB with corn rows. Her voice, the way she talked, acted - it was amazing and astounding at the same time; HOW on EARTH could JB let his own daughter end up in such a level of, disrepair?

But of course, hey, I could be completely wrong. She could have been in the studio all afternoon and hit the bar on the way home, no shower, and the bandages could be from a car accident. Whatever the case...

She sang "The Greatest Love Of All", an odd choice, but we muddled through it, and this girl had all the roughness in her voice of James Brown, but at the same time, full control of her voice - if JB could sing Whitney - ahh - it's hard to explain. But damn impressive, and again, I was amazed and baffled at the same time.

Everyone applauded, she was very polite and thanked us and left the stage. We went back to our usual funky jams, and 2 hours later wrapped it up. (yes, we finished at 2:30, and I was 3 hours from home. AUUGH).

JB's daughter came up to us and said we were the funkiest band she'd heard, and the next time we're in town, she's bringing her daddy. She was the nicest, most humble person, for having such amazing talent and acknowledging that she was not in her prime (nodding at the cast and the bandage).

It was an honor. And again, at the same time, I can't help but feel sorry for the girl to appear to be so downtrodden when her daddy is the hardest working man in showbidness.

If i didn't have to get up the next day sometime before 5pm, I would have stayed to talk to her. But as it was, I left with a huge(r) ego, having received such a compliment from someone who, I'm sure, has heard her share of funky bands.

It was something I'll definitely remember for as long as I live... moreso of the spectacle of it all, not just the "I met JB's daughter!" aspect.

The bar was the SEEDIEST joint I've ever played. I'm surprised there wasn't chickenwire between the stage and the crowd.
