I'm real curious as to the reasons some people can sing without any lesons and some can't. What are the physical advantages? (Size of mouth, size of lungs etc...?)

Also will lessons and constant practise make anyone sound good?

I can sing & I've never had any singing lesson's!!!. However it took abit of pratice tho!!!.

It's not really the size of mouth and lungs...it's really the placements of the larynx and the tounge inside the mouth..and how you vocal chords vibrate against each other...also proper breathing and usage of diaphragm helps also. If you don't have the tone for singing..you just don't..lessons can't help that.(I'm a music education major.)

I think most people believe they can't sing for whatever reason, but it's just like everything else, you have to practice. I suppose some ARE just blessed with natural talent. I also think everyone has something unique to offer, regardless of natural talent.

I just started singing this last year and for the longest time I didn't think I could. I'm not totally satisfied, but I've been getting some encouraging feedback and that's cool. So I would say just be natural, but whatever you do make sure you stay in key. hehe

It's the nurture versus nature argument:

Did you GET that voice cuz you were around singers all your life, or did you HAVE that voice when you were born?

A good example is the diff between me and my sister. We grew up in a musical family - dad plays guitar, mom sang in the Atlanta Symphony Choir, Grandmother had a radio show back in the day as a concert pianist...

My sister can sing, but it makes you break out and you need an ointment to get rid of the hives. I can sing, and it makes you break into your wallet.

Oh, I kid. Man I'm the funny bastard.

But seriously. I can sing good enough - probably was AS good as she was - meaning, we could HIT the notes, could recognize tonal variations, know when we're in key, etc, but the flair, the stuff that makes folks go "oh, damn , that person is GOOD, yo" - that came from singing in bands over the past 22 years. She didn't do that, I did.

Ain't saying I'm Mariah Muthafrickin Carey, hell, I aint saying i'm Drew Carey - just saying, I can hit the note, I can sing harmonies, I can get my vibrato on, I can blah blah; whereas my sister will make you cry and want to bathe in Lye soap. No offense, just saying, the sistah cain't fuckin sing.

So, if you've always wanted to be a singer, if you've always sang in the car, in the shower, in the elevator, then you have DRIVE. If you've had SOME sort of musical education be it school band or church choir, then you've had SOME education which will help you comprehend the things that make a GOOD singer shine.

What sets the Donnie Hathaways and Mariah Careys apart from you and me? (and don't kill me for putting them in the same sentence) it's the sprinkles ON the donut. They can warble, they're not afraid to go outside the box - in Christina's case, she's all OVER the place. But you get the point - I didn't start to excel as a singer until somebody told me - "it's in you, but you're afraid to let it out" - which is exactly what i tell lots of singers on this site - I hear a LOT of talent in the songs posted here, veiled by fear/insecurity. Cut loose, set it free, ain't gonna hurt nobody...

One of my favourite singers is Axl Rose, and I guess technically he anit a great singer but he makes his voice work for him, and when it works it sounds great (well to me at least)

Damn true! I think a lot of singing is about confidence in your voice no matter what it sounds like. Listen to guys like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Jimi Hendrix. I dont' think anyone would disagree that these guys dont have BEAUTIFUL voices, but they had the confidence to make what they DID have work and that's the key really.

Didn't mean to freak anyone out by my statement..I was addressing the "technical" aspects of good singing...good singing meaning how to protect your voice for the future,so you don't wind up surgically removing something in there!
But perception is a whole different thing,for every person that thinks someone can sing,someone thinks they can't...so you just have to ignore all that and sing what you feel homie!
