Where can someone get the "linn/80's sounding drums?

Anyone know if there is a drum machine out there or disk you can pop into a keyboard that resembles the linn drum machine sounds/prince 80's sounds. I have a linn 9000 in mint condition with the discs with all of the sounds but I don't have the patience to run it!!! HELP!!!

Maybe a cheap but good way it to buy some computer software. I bought Rebirth 2.0 awhile back and I still use it now. You can expand it too with "mods" (add on sounds)

The samples used in Rebirth are taken directly from the Linn so they are 100% accurate. :+)

This should be added to the Cloud FAQs. There's a few posts from the past about Linn samples. You can find them online pretty easily. If you're just looking for the samples to put into a computer app, then it's no problem to get them online. Do a search on google for "Linn Drum" +samples +download

I want to use them on another drum machine or a keyboard. I am terrible with computer stuff.

Well, you're going to have to do some sort of computering to get the sounds from one machine into a drum machine, unless you go buy a Linn Drum. I don't know of any drum machines that have the Linn Drum sound.

I tried that and all I got were regular drum sounds. What are the "Prince" sounds (setting) called? You know, the early songs like "Let's Go Crazy", "1999", Pop Life", etc..

The sounds in these zip packs are the same as my Zoom drum machine.

Prince detuned the drums. That's how they have the different tone than the original samples you might find online.

I've been trying to do this for years and this is what I've found out from my experience.

Like Otan said, it is very easy to find the Linn Drum sound samples (in .wav) format online. From there you can load them into a software drum machine and use them.

In terms of hardware, I've yet to find a drum machine that has similar sounds. The best way is if you have a smapling drum machine (like Akai MPC 2000) you can get the sounds from online or on disks and sample them into your machine. Persoanlly, I didn't want to spend like $2,000 on that.

A couple key points to keep in mind:
  • The Linn LM-1 and "LinnDrum" (AKA LM-2) are 2 different machines. The characteristic Prince sound is from the LM-1, the first one, of which only like 500 were made and almost impossible to find anymore (i've tried!).
The LinnDrum (LM2) is easier to get... I just got on on ebay a few months ago but has slightly different sounds.
Mainly the snare which is they key sound you want. I've heard you can get an LM-1 CHip to put in the LM2 so it will have the same sounds. I haven't done it yet but want to at some point.

  • They key sounds are the LM1 snare. On Purple Rain and 1999 albums... he tuned the snare down... it gives that very FAT snare sound... almost like a snare, bass , and claps are hitting at the same time. On later songs, he tuned the snare up for a cleaner, lighter sound (songs on SOTT... can't think of title right now).

  • Another key sound is the sidestick tuned down. This is often used as syncopation sounds (as in Let's Go Crazy, that kinda clickin sound that plays in syncopation). He often used this sound as an accent on the 2 or 4 beat.

  • Similarly, the "claps" sound was used a lot. Sometimes instead of a snare (often on breakdowns), or to accent a 2 or 4 beat. (e.g. on I Wold Die 4 U, the 4th beat has a clap instead of a snare during the chorus)

  • He often ran these sounds through effects or guitar pedals to make them different sounds (echos, reverbs etc.). I've heard he sometimes played them backwards too.
