What do you think the characteristics are of a good girls group?

Composing/writing their own music.

It depends, if the Spice girls wrote their own shit, it would still be shit. If Wendy and Lisa didn't write their own music it would still be good music.
SO IMO the main characteristc of a good girls group is performing with talent good songs.

For me it's just good songs. Musicianship don't mean doody to me. Sleater Kinney is a good example. I expected so much from them and they just bore me. The Donna's - that's another example - chicks who rock!? Hell yeah! And then you hear the stuff and it's just weak.

The Spice Girls DID have some fun songs. Ain't saying I'm starting up spicegirls.org or nothing, but, come on, "If you wanna be my lover" was fun. Didn't cure aids or get us on the moon, but it was boppable.

In the end, I think it's all about marketing/publicity. There's a million and one girl groups popping up weekly. What distinguishes one from another? Constant barrage of publicity - that's how Spice Girls, Beyonce's group, umm, ANY of them - that's how I learned about them - was from CONSTANTLY being told about them... the race is to the persistent, not the slick, not the sly, not the pretty, talented, but the MARKETED.

That's my take. But hey, I ain't a fan of girl groups all that much - not since Expose and "Let Me Be The One".

I don't think a girls group should have different characteristics from any other artist. It's important be themself, sing or play what they really feel inside. Don't try to copy someone else (just like I do with P), but find a personal way to the music.
