Most definatly, I think maybe we need to make more of a point of mentioning that the NFO is unbiased & welcomes all contributions for inclusion in the compilation.

Nice track Styles

I am digging on "Sweet Erotica". Personally, I would like to see that on Project 2 more than "4th Dimension", but I like 4th Dimension also. "I Can't" is cool also.

I really like "Sweet Erotica". Vibes very well with the Project.

Peace,
JD

Thank you Talmuzic!

I'm recording at a friend's place. He's got a pretty cool set up and all of the instruments are over there, so I can just go in and give him an idea of what I'm looking for and he engineer's it while I call out the next axe. Its a pretty interesting process watching him see the song develop because I can't read music (it just comes from my head). So I'll start with a base instrument and layer everything from there and then you can see the light go off in his head half-way thru the song as to where its going. It's the first time I've ever used someone behind the board, normally I'm doing it all on my own.

I can't wait to check out your website!

Thanx Vina,

I really did luck out with this current project because my engineer really knows music and can understand and interpret to the board when I refer to sounds in shades of colors, etc...He and I have a really good language together and it speeds up the recording process a great deal.

BTW, the more I hear your voice, the more I'd love to put something to it!

yo Jshua, take time to learn music theory. It will help the music make more sense in a technical way. One chord at a time.

Hey Tal,

I am actually studying a little theory right now; Primarily because I've got ideas for string and horn arrangements which are to take place within the next couple of months. I am, however, a bit freaked out by the way music "should be done" because I like creating stuff that shouldn't make sense on paper but makes sense to the ear and more importantly, the heart...

Hey Jshua, I took music theory in high school and college and I never use it unless I run into a creative block and then I go in and figure out what key I'm in and start to think about what is possible. Your music is very complex, so I agree with Tal it would be helpful, but like I said I only use it as a last resort so to speak. Let the creativity flow.

Horn sections and string arrangements can be done with midi on a sequencer, just layering the parts and feeling it out. I have tried this and it is helpful to know the chords you are using, still there can be magic in feeling it and finding it on the keyboard. What is in your head might not be conventional theory. It's a balance of both, I guess.

Thanx Vina,

I'm using a 3 piece horn section comprised of: Trombone, Trumpet and Sax. And its pretty facinating understanding the scales and range of each instrument--what they can and can't formally do. I really dig the bebop era and especially what Eric Leeds and Atlanta Bliss did during the Parade to Lovesexy era. So I'm composing towards that end--it should be pretty cool when its all said and done.

As far as the strings, I've got a quartet lined up and they're pretty versitile. I'm probably gonna cheat a little like Zappa used to do and double the string parts to make them a bit more full...

It should make for some challenging stuff!

Thank you for the insight Vina and Tal,

peace

Hey Jshua. I'm finally taking time to go and lissen to all these new artists and new songs. The Helladays have worked me hard. Glad they're almost over.

First off - I TOTALLY dig Jazzism, and anything I say here is my opinion and certainly is nothing against your creativity or your ideas... the stuff I write is usually comments about the recording process, or maybe arrangement - other folks will tell you - I'm blunt sometimes but I'll certainly eat my shoe if I offend.

4th Dimension:
The first thing that hits me is your very first words - I had no idea what you were saying until I saw the title of the song - sounds like you're saying "fault you mention" or "fonta mansion".

Secondly and lastly - the lead guitar. The playing is awesome. The tone is buried. Are you running the thing thru a wah pedal in a fixed position? It's cutting thru the mix, but it's doing it like a weed eater. My own opinion here - roll back the distortion a hair - it'll give the tone more body and you can turn the volume up some.

Other than that, the song has a VERY cool vibe.

I Can't
Wow. This thing is awesome. Joni and Prince and Dan Fogelberg or something. This is just beautiful. Awesome arrangement, harmonies, sheeyit. Everything.

Hey Otan!

First off, thank you for listening!

smile

Second, I agree with you about the Guitar lead on 4th Dimension: I was using a crybaby wah at a somewhat fixed angle for most of the solo a la Hendrix, who is my favorite guitarist of all time (aside from Prince and Vai). I'm not sure of what to do about it, cause I really like that solo.

hmmm

and yeah, the vocals are a bit garbled, I guess I was trying to be too cool...
