Dumb MUSIC questions here!

C'mon now, don't be afraid. No matter how much we know, we don't know everything. Post your "dumb" MUSIC question(s) here. About ANYTHING music related. We all can help each other. Ask about playing, recording, writing...whatever. which reminds me, I'm still having my talk box problems. hehe I just would like to be able to help and I find that a lot of people don't like to feel "dumb" when asking a question that they feel they should answer to. I've heard them just about all. I promise I won't laugh or anything...just try to help! :+) If I don't know the answer, I know there are tons of you other helpful people out there. I'm not afraid to do a little research either if I don't know. :+) Take care everybody!

What kind of keyboard was Prince using on The Time's first record? I really like the analog lines in "get it up"

I've been trying to re-create that "Gimme some horns" keyboard riff for years. I"ve heard it's Oberheim but probably layered a lot. But live, I doubt they could've had too many layers with just Jimmy and Monte playing analog synths. I htink the'res a lot of Mod Wheel going on too.

ANyone know what I"m talking about... it's a common riff used on many early Prince and Time songs.

'73 Rhodes Piano. - Broken e-flat.
What is the name of the part that the hammer stikes to make the sound? That is the part that's broken. The little medel rod.

Maybe I'd have better luck finding it on google if I knew the name of the part.

Recommend some good drum heads. No cheap ones. Good brand that will last a long time. The ones I have are the original ones from like 1975. (A good drummer should not have to go throuh skins too much, IMO)

Kick drum. 1975 Ludwig (28 inch!) What is the name of the piece that holds the head on? and do they still make them out of wood. - cracked.

Oh, ever ran a guitar flange (the old 1970's models, not the newer crap) through an electric piano? Wanna do that next.

Making a riser for a drum kit. How high is too high? how much support - as in how many inches do you place another 2X4 for support - per square or could I go a little wider? I'd like to use the under part for storage. Half inch plywood or full 1 inch? wood glue and screws or just screws and nails? Carpet that mother when I'm done? or paint it white to match the walls.

Sound foam (wall covering) - good stuff that's cheap and where?

Mac G-5...
Now or wait a little longer for any bugs to work out?

For some reason, I half expected the answer to be a DX7... Vina? Anyone? Oberheim's as good a guess as any. I got no clue.

Hey everybody!

Otan, I have been very busy lately so I haven't had time to look into your questions or actually any of these yet. hehe

Check this site here...
http://www.pianoparts.com/ They have a complete diagram of how a piano looks internally and the name of each part.

ANSWER:
Well, I use Remo drums heads, not the cheap ones! hehe I haven't broken one yet. The only time I've broken a drum head is playing some fast and hard punk or metal stuff. hehe Since I switched to these Remo drum heads (2 years ago) I've had no problems at all and they stay in tune nicely. :+)

Oh, ever ran a guitar flange (the old 1970's models, not the newer crap) through an electric piano? Wanna do that next.

ANSWER:
No but I would be careful. Whenever hooking up older equipment to newer equipment that it's not intended to work with, it could actually damage it. I had a friend once hook up some type of FX box with his bass that had active pick ups... the bass didn't work right after that. It should be fine but I'm just saying. :+) If it starts smoking...unplug it! (kidding) I did hook up my Hendrix wah pedal up to one of my old keyboards once, it worked out ok.

ANSWER:
I have a friend who works for Home Depot, I'll ask them about the materials to use. :+) Other than that, I would say use carpet so your drums don't get scratched and slide all over the riser (hopefully not OFF the riser) hehe Also, I've seen various heights, I guess in a way it depends on how well you want to be seen. :+) Seriously, I would say maybe a foot or 2.

Sound foam (wall covering) - good stuff that's cheap and where?

ANSWER:
Go to Guitar Center. I am not fond of that place but they do have decent selection. There is a brand I checked out once that I thought was good for the $, that was a long time ago though, I'll try to remember.

Mac G-5...
Now or wait a little longer for any bugs to work out?

ANSWER:
I am waiting to get my Mac, I wish they weren't so much $$$! ahhh I actually will probably wait a year. Mainly because I was talking to my friend,(works at a studio that uses a few macs.) he said something about some OS issues with various software. Not to mention working fully with certain types of plug in hardware.

The tie to the theramin is a pretty amazing coincidence.

Nah, how old do you think I am? (kidding) hehe I would love to try out some cool vintage gear. I still have an old Gibson tube amp from 1969 that I want to restore. (new tubes, speaker, check the wiring..etc) :+) Even in the state it's in, it sounds nice.
