Could somebody please explain to me what the musical term 'Chops' stands for? I hear it mentioned alot when people discuss jazz.

Thanks

awhile ago i use to hear it just concerning how fast one can play.
But the more i've been in music i have heard it expand to being, not just fast, but technical one is, those two combined.

ie: Do u have the chops to play that song
means: Do u have the talent (technique-ability) to play that song.

Something like that.

Its pretty much slang for, "Balls" lol

In classic jazz, technique is very important, and technique comes with experience (practice, skill, knowledge of jazz, etc) and is often a "gift" as well. I think this is what they mean.

Chops is another word for talent or good ability.
