Recording Studios...

Hello, I just thought a recording thread might be nice for any questions about equipment, techniques or crazy stories. :+) I just completely had my home studio redone. I bought new mics, keyboard, software, computer and input module. I'm happy that recording has gotten better and cheaper! hehe Anyway... any other recording engineers here or people interested in recording? TAKE CARE EVERYBODY!!

I remember you from way back. You suggested a Prince.org musicians community but no one really took it seriously. Here it is now! Welcome to the family!

WARNING: The first 2 paragraphs are a little off topic! hehe

:+) Thanks VinaBlue!
I am glad we have this forum. It's a nice way to get info. I think it's cool that we don't have to bore other people in other forums about out nerdy music stuff. hehe I am really surprised at times how most people have no clue how the music industry works. I like explaining it because if people understand it more, they appreciate it more. You don't know how many times I play one of my songs and people ask me... "Did you write it?"...yes "Who is playing the instruments?" I am "How do you play all of those at the same time?" hehehe That's typically what I get. I won't even get into explaining record labels to people...phew.

Anyway, this is a cool forum to have and I hope we get more and more people here. We can also help promote each other which is nice because musically we have a smiliar base. (we're into Prince's music to various degrees) I have to admit, Prince's influence for me isn't there so much for me anymore but I still love and respect the songs.

OK, I guess I better get back on topic. What would you say is the best vocal mic for the $? I just got a Shure SM27 and I was surprised with how it sounded for the $. I am thinking about getting another new condensor mic for drums. Maybe to record as an overhead but I have wanted a good mic for a deep, clear, booming tom sound on drums. Any mics to suggest? I'm looking at an Oktava or AKG but that's all I've checked out so far for a tom mic, I mostly looked at vocal mics instead. Take care everybody!

I have 2 or 3 SM57's. I use them for a fair amount of things... mic guitar, mic snare... or use it as a hammer. :+) I used it as a kick mic too for fun on a song. I actually have recorded vocals with it too now that I think about it. I like trying my mics for various things. I just make sure that the type of mic I use can handle it for things like frequency range and of course SPL.

Anybody have any 3 or 4 drum mic set up they like to use? I like doing the typical kick mic, one for the snare, crash and tom and another mic for the ride, tom 2 and floor tom. (Usually a large diaphram condensor) Then I put an overhead mic right above the drummers head to get the "sitting at the kit" sound. You just have to make sure you have proper spacing and placement when you do that so you don't get phasing and all that fun stuff. That's one of the few different ways I like to mic my drums. If I want a nice punchy kick I usually use EQ AFTER I record to suck out the 300hz frequency.

Ahhh... now I sound like such a huge nerd! hehe :+P

Welll, he started a thread about it in the Old GD in March of 2002.
http://www.prince.org/msg...sinox&pg=6
(See his 03/06/2002 post)
You can't access it now but I printed out a copy so I knew who the other org musicians were. No one really did anything about having a forum until JD and I asked for one so people wouldn't get so poopy about us talking about our music in GD or Music:Non-Prince.

I've got a couple of SM-57s and a diaphram Octavia (thx to Beau) with a Marshall JCM-900 and (1) 4 x 12 cabinet. A small Marshall practice amp, an Ampeg BA 119 with a squire bass.

This weekend comes the new 10 piece drum set. I can't wait.

Now all I need is the update to Sonar and I'll be back in business.

SUCH a nerd but damn if I'm not writing it all down for this weekend's recording fest.

Slave2 - what kinda squire do you have? Precision or Jazz? I just bought an OLP Stingray knockoff and IT IS THE BOMB. Got it for $139 at musicians friend. (5 sting no less!)

Precision and I paid $99 on sale (Guitar Center) at the same time I found my Ampeg brand new for $325.

It stays in tune which is morethan I can say about the 3 acoustic guitars I have.

Oh yeah, I forgot about those.

(1) Les Paul standard, (1) Gibson Blues Hawk, (2) regular acoustic guitars and (1) back-pack guitar

What kinda mixing board(s) you all have? What kinda software do you use? I have a Trashcan..oops
Tascam TM-D1000 and I use a M-Audio Firewire410 for input to my computer. I have Cakewalk and an older version of Sonar. I recently got some new software too that I have yet to check out. Somebody told me to get the latest version of Sonar because it "rocks". I have to check it out. I would LOVE to have Pro Tools but with all of the other equipment I'm buying I can't afford it! hehe You don't know how expensive MUSIC is until you're actually doing it. All of the little crap you have to buy is what really kills you (and your pocket book) K... I'm off to bed.

I use Cakewalk 9 for now. Later on I'll move up to Sonar and maybe try Cubase. Pro Tools would be nice, but it's mucho dinero. I plan on getting a better PC next year.

Hey, you can't sleep just yet! I wanna get one of these!

I've never used an external sound device before, and am probably gonna get one of these as I only want to use a laptop for the computer stuff...at the moment things have been plugged directly into the mic-input of the computer...but I got a firewire so the M-audio is supposedly the best for its worth.

So once plugged in, is the computers own internal sound card important or does the device serve as an external alternative to the piece of crud that's permanently fixed inside my computer? I will be using Cubase hopefully, and will have one midi-in, and two/three audio ins. Will the M-Audio provide duplex-recording capability, and how is the lag?

Sorry for the supid questions!

OK, the M-Audio Firewire 410 uses a LOT of power. It even has its own power supply. I will say that for the $, it's GREAT! It made me interested in other M-Audio products. I already bought their MIDI box a few years back. Anyway, you won't even be using your internal sound card at all, that's what I love about the 410! I can finally record in true 24 bit digital audio. A problem I kinda had was finding a burning software that could actually handle my 24bit audio properly.

As far as lag goes, You might have to adjust some settnigs on your computer but if you have a 1.2 gig or faster you should be fine. (I think the min requirement is 800mhz, might be lower but I wouldn't expect anything from the sound card if it were) I am looking at adding a hyper threading pentium 4 to my current computer. Right now I have an AMD Athlon 2400. So far I've had it about 3 or 4 months and I love my 410. All of ther inputs are great. I can plug my outboard gear into my mixer and use S/PDIF (Digital coaxial) cable to record from my digital mixer. Phantom power is a great feature too.

The only thing I wish I had was more inputs for drum recording. I use my mixer for that but still, I have to use a gate while recording and I can't stand that! hehe If I could record directly all of the tracks seperately and then edit and gate using software, I'd much rather do that!!! In the next year or so, I plan to buy a hard drive recorded so I can use my seperate recording tracks and then dump them individually into my computer. I might even just buy a different input device that can do all of that too. There are a few reasons while I like the hard drive recorder/mixers though.

This is proof that you shouldn't ask me a question! hehe ;+P I dunno when to stop at times. :+) TAKE CARE and good luck!

The new producers version of Sonar is amazing. It has a loop machine that no matter what you drag in a window it syncs up time. It's a million times better than Fruity loops because it works in that Cakewalk mode (with wave files) that I've gotten really familiar with.

I'm feelin you on the cash though, it's $500.

My friend has it on his machine. So much to learn...
