The Atlanta Jazz Scene

As a recent transplant to the city of Atlanta, I was wondering if there are any good jazz clubs here in the city(I'm sure there are, I just don't know about them) Also are there any places where they let people sit in? I really miss playing jazz a lot and want to get out and at least catch some of the players down here. Any help would be great! Thanks!

Go to Sambucca Jazz Cafe on Piedmont Road, just south of Peachtree in Buckhead. On the West side of the street, next to Bones.

Cafe 290 has an open jam, but beware - they're HARSH. If you can't follow on the first song, they'll boot your ass. Literally - there's a guy that boots cars, and he'll slap one on your leg.

Seriously - those jackasses' goal is to mess you up. I've heard tales man - they're harsh and just mean - trying to break you and mess you up on purpose... totally the opposite of what I'd think an open jam should be.

Apache Cafe had an open jam on Wednesdays, I don't know if they still do. Groovement might know about it.

There's a never-ending list of open blues jams, on the other hand, ranging from the cream of the Atlanta crop (Darwin's on Wednesdays) to the crap of the crapper (don't make me name names).

Northside Tavern USED to have the best in town, but Johnny Knox is a jacktard who insist on sitting in with every band and won't let you use ANY pedals, OR your own amp, so you have to run through his rockabilly set up. It's crap.

If you have more questions about it - just org me. I've hit a lot of the jams, but no jazz ones.

Thanks a lot you guys! I am definitely gonna go check these out! Playing with a band is great but I love just going out and jamming wiht other people too.

Csharp,
I really love it here. It's great because it's a big city, and a big market, but the pace isn't as fast as NYC or LA. The people here are a LOT friendlier as well! Go for it! LEt me know if you wind up out here eventually!

I am planning a visit/trip this summer to check out the scence, also to test the job market. When and if I do move, that's going to be it. I plan on making the move final. Thanks for listening.

not all jams are created equal...
perhaps the goal is not to "mess you up", but weed out the real players from the ones "in training". sometimes it's best to just listen, not to try and roll with musicians that are a cut above your abilities. you can gain a lot from listening, instead of trying to hang on for dear life!

I dissagree.
He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. - Albert Einstein

I agree and disgree at the same time. I've been at jams and felt that exact way - "this guy just bought that les paul from Guitar Center yesterday. oh lord..." but if a person CAN play well, or even just medium-well, what's the point of intentionally trying to bump him off because you've been playing that jam for 8 months and you know the songs already? it's BS. Go pat yourself on the back if you think you're the badassinest around and can bust a move on any walk-up jammer. And then kiss my ass. It's called OPEN jam, not "you better be damn good or you're not allowed up here".

If they wanna change the name, then I won't talk so badly about it...

I think music has gotten too competitive. I remember when I was in marching band and we went to competitions, some of the students from other schools weren't allowed to talk to members of other bands they were competing with. Rather silly if you ask me. But it's stupid to boot someone out just because they aren't an amazing player. Let them strum along or whatever, give them a little solo time and move on. I think a lot of musicians forget that they were once at that level as well.

Exactly! That's EXACTLY my point. The folks that believe they're the bomb just don't remember the days of being some nervous guy with a new guitar just wanting to play with someone with talent, JUST for the sake of picking up some experience.

Ego is a huge part of most musicians personality and has made me find people with less talent but more heart. I know it's a generalization but it's based on experience.
