I heard this on the radio about the music biz:

It's not WHO you know. It's who knows YOU.

If nobody knows you, you won't get anywhere. If folks know you, but it's not a good rep, you won't get anywhere. If lots of folks know you and it's a good rep, you'll get called for gigs and shows and brought in under people's wings all the time.

It worked for me. And trust me - ANYONE will be a good connection in the future. You will meet some lowly intern this week and in 5 months they'll be putting together a project - their FIRST major project, and they'll be looking for people to bring in with them. If you left a good impression with them, they'll remember you. If you sit back and wait for people to discover your brilliance and genius, you wont go anywhere.

I had a teacher (who managed the Goo Goo Dolls and Sixpence Nonethericher) tell me that "Success isn't being in the right place at the right time, it's PUTTING yourself in the right place at the right time." Remember that you dont' have to be a rock star to be a musician and you don't have to be a musician to be a rock star.

Actually, the saying is "PUT yourself in the right place and then do what you can to create the right time."

or was it,

"Get to the right time and then be everywhere"

or, no, wait,

"Wear leather. always wear leather."

Do what I do - Go out on a limb, have a strong belief system but make sure U can back your ass up.

Also, don't say things U can't do, U'll only get found out later!

PLUG PLUG AND SHAMELESSLY PLUG... rebel against A&R guys, oversaturate Open Mic Nights, play at jam sessions,
bottom line - EXPOSE YOURSELF AS MUCH AS U CAN IN ANY FORM U CAN (As long as it is legal).

We are in the age of multimedia where there are sooo many ways of getting out there.

I can say that I have 'made it'. Okay I don't have a UK Top 100, but who's 2 say that because of that, U ain't made it in the so-called 'music business'?

Also, DON'T buy into namedroppers i.e. if some1 says theat they've mananged Mariah Carey, about 8 out of 10 times, what they mean is that they met her once because They were organising the catering for a party she was attending!

Be yourself, be confident, expose yourself. 4 me, it's all about having a strong belief system.

U can put others down if U wish (although I wouldn't advise it), but if U do, U betta be ready to come and back yourself up 10-fold.

p.s - I hate Daniel Bedingfield. mr.green

Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

Its true what everyone has said thus far..listen to some of the music that your fellow orgers have contributed. Some of it is better than anything you will hear on the radio. In my humble opinion, Its more of a popularity contest when you make it. Its who you know, who knows you, who you are sleeping with and who u are using drugs with. Very little is based on merit anymore. You have a better chance of getting a record deal today if you look like a supermodel, rather than having talent like Stevie Wonder. Now having Stevie's Talent and looking like a supermodel...well then u r in.

The other option, in my opinion, is to get with someone as they are starting out. I met someone that was starting something in its nucleus. Because I met him early, I was able to hang onto his coattails and get paid for providing music for him and his corporation. Today, there is a loyalty fator(plus contracts) because I was there in the beginning..but to get that kind of hook up is almost pure luck. drink

What is "really making it" in the music business today?
