Attention Funk Guitar enthusiasts!

Since there's so little info in the magazines and on websites about learning to play funk guitar, I've built a little site with tips on sounds, techniques, some basic chord tabs, tips for listening etc. I doesn't look too good but maybe it will help the funk guitar newbies. Check it out at http://www.angelfire.com/music5/hectim

Suggestions and comments welcome!!

P.S. thanks to Maggot brain for suggesting Angelfire!

Really cool Hectim, educating people on the funk. There's always something new to learn no matter how much you know.

Maybe a glossary of terms too?

ChickenGrease; adj. the look on one's face when they can't get off the 9th chord because it's so funky. lol

Very Cool site you've created. You've got some great riffs going on there. Have you got more? I'm betting you have. Have you considered compiling an instructional CD/book?
Incidentally I found a video featuring Al Mackay of Earth,Wind, and Fire very useful in helping me to get my chops going.
Well done and Cheers.

Thanx everybody! I programmed the drums in Steinberg B-Box, then exported them as audio and imported them into Cubasis. There I added the rest.

anything said about funk guitar has to include the p-funk guitar army. hope to see more information on the style of rhythm/almost lead playing originating in plainfield, new jersey. notable residents include eddie hazel, garry shider, glen goins, cordell "boogie" mosson & billy "bass" nelson. their indigenous riffability is the signature sound of parliament/funkadelic.

also as a suggestion, you might want to include Bruno Speight as one of the players on the list. most notable for his playing in the SOS band (take your time, do it right), he's currently playing with maceo parker. a relentless rhythm guitarist, in the mold of a jimmy nolen, has time like a rolex, can hold a groove for hours unphased, then upon request rip into some of the most searing rock and/or jazz lead you'll ever hear. if you ever see maceo live, you'll know exactly what i'm talking about!

P-Funk is on the Players page. However, Bruno Speight is a great suggestion. I saw him with Maceo and he SMOKED. I haven't heard the SOS band stuff though, what albums are those tracks on?

I was looking up other funk guitarists like the guy from K.C. and the Sunshine Band (he was the first guy to do the speeded up guitar rhythm thing that Prince ended up using on Erotic City among others).

He was killed by a steam roller! TELL ME there ain't foul play in that! A STEAM ROLLER? The thing goes like 1 mile per hour. How on earth do you get accidentally run over by a steam roller?

Anyhow. He was one of my favorite funk guitarists, along with Nile Rogers, when I was getting my learn on back in the day. I read an interview with Nile where he said he plays the guitar as if it were a horn section - I STILL use that advise when playing funk rhythm.
