Yeah, it's Prince alright! Watch the movie of "Purple Rain", or the Rave Un2 The Year 2000 video. Although I've noticed that you can't really see Prince playing the Let's Go Crazy solo in Purple Rain, the light kinda obscures him... you get a better idea in Rave Un2 The Year 2000, where prince plays the hell out of it on the Blue Cloud.

Speaking of which, does anyone know the tabs for it?

Yes, I am on crack, thankyou for your polite reply. I am 16 years old, and a fairly new fan, so excuse me for not being a fucking historian.

I was almost sure it was him, and I was just making sure, I thought some of you would be able to help me out.

Thanks MrSquiggle, and Yeah, I would love the tabs also, I have searched with no luck.

Thom.

Welcome to the strange and terrifying world called online Prince fan community kiddo!
As far as I know, P plays the lead guitar parts on every studio release up to the diamonds and pearls album. The only exception I know of is Little Red Corvette, which Dez Dickerson did. Levi Seacer played the solo on Sexy MF and the riff on willing and able iirc. Maybe Wendy played some riffs on the 12 inch versions of revolution tracks.
There's a book with tab for Purple Rain which is highly recommended, not sure if it's still in print. If you can't find, it, I recommended ripping the solo to your pc and using a program like sound Forge to slow it down. Anyway, remeber it's basically in the blues scale but with some tasty minor third to major third hammer-ons and you're well on your way.

I still can't believe that such a great, aspired to guitar player doesn't have any tab books published. Something along the lines of the 'Signature Licks' books would be great. Come on Hal Leonard!

In this day and age of Pop Stars that don't play or write a damn thing, this is a valid question. Unfortunately.

But yeah, help us out by qualifying your question with a little info on you. If someone clicked on your profile and saw that you were 16, maybe some people wouldn't be rude. Then again, this is Prince.org. Welcome!

Seriously, the solos on "Let's Go Crazy" are some of the hottest guitar work I've heard EVER, Van Halen be damned! And Vina you are right about most pop stars not even playing anything on their albums...I think by the time most of them come in to record, all the instrumental parts are alredy done. It's so funny that so many "musicians" these days AREN'T musicians.

Thanks for your help guys!

I was not really angry about that reply before, it is just that i truly did think it was a valid question. I know prince has the talent to play that solo, I just wanted to know if he did it himself cause I am going to see prince tonight in Melbourne and I'm looking forward to hearing that solo!

hectim, That is a good idea slowing it down on the computer to hear it! I never really thought of that. See usually I just improvise anyway, I have been playing for some 8 years or more and love to play improv, but this is a tasty fucking solo i can't resist!!

Cheers guys!

While I like the Let's Go Crazy solo those kinds of things are fairly easy to play (but sound impressive to the newbie guitarist or non-musicians). I've always said about Jimi Hendrix that guitarists (new ones) go through three stages listening to Hendrix. 1) All the feeback stuff sounds (and looks) cool and you think he's greatest 2) after you've been playing a little you realize you can do that stuff in your sleep and begin to think he's a charlatan 3) then you REALLY learn to play and listen to things (like Red House, it's live versions, etc.) and listen to him PLAYING and he becomes a god.

Prince is obviously in that same catagory (on not just guitar but practically every instrument). When people mention the Purple Rain solo I always say that sadly the general public has never really heard his greatest stuff (either because they weren't hits or a on boots).

I'm baffled. Who on earth are you talking about? BB King? Clapton? Who do you know that's a musician that doesn't play on their records? That's the most odd statement I've heard all day. Serious - who are you and Vina talking about?

That's my thang. Even if I'm not technically the best guitarist of the evening, I usually have the non-guitarists believing I am fabulous smile Very annoying to the shred/jazz virtuoso types who play on the same bill but hey, I can't help myself!

Dude I totally agree with you. Knowing how to solo in the pixelodian mode over a diminished 5 chord ain't NEAR as jaw dropping as bending a note up to the root and holding it for 5 measures. (Machine Gun Solo - it BLEW my effing mind) or the standard trill. Panties fly and it's stuff I learnt the first year I played guitar. (ain't saying I learned how to play it WELL last year, just LEARNT it).

the only thing that impress me on this solo is that his playing is very clean, quick and clean, i don't know if it's his gear or anything, but it doesen't sound like a sound mess. It's rather beautiful.

POP stars. I didn't say musicians, did I? This 16 year old kid (Thom) is asking if Prince plays his own music. ONLY a 16 year old kid nowadays would ask such a thing. Nothing against Thom... I was just pointing out that nowadays you can pretend you play an instrument or write your songs and people will believe it without seeing proof.

An example? I hear that Arvil Levigne (or however you spell it) says she plays guitar but NEVER does it live and possibly just holds a guitar in her videos or photoshoots. Things like that.

I'm telling you, forget thechronic. We can't compete. He's right. He doesn't give his music away. It's available, just like his mom, on 10th Street, $5 a piece.

I don't wanna force no more thread lockdowns, but I'm just sick of the guy. He's garnering attention because apparently his mom is too busy to give him any, or, whatever. It's a 11 year old pausing between ADHD fits to make a post and then roll on the aftermath of it, who knows. It's annoying, and Saturday I was lit like a flare after a gig and decided to launch it all on the guy.

If I caused you to jump out a window, I'm sincerely soyry TC. No harm was intended and I know my potty mouth might have carried me a little too far.

At least, that's what your mom said this morning in the shower.

Prince happens to be my favorite guitarist. I don't really care about stunning virtuosity when it comes to guitar playing. It's the passion you hear in his solos that's still pretty rare in my opinion. The solo at the end of "Gold" is awesome. Nothing all that innovative, but his flare for melody and the passion in it sounds like the guitar is singing. Hey Thom, check out the licks on "Pink Cashmere" from the "HITS" CD. NICE.

I dont' really consider Clapton or BB King "pop" musicians. I was talking more about the whole Britney/Christina/Justin type of thing. And I was talking more in terms of the instrumental side of things. Although to Justin's credit, he didnt' really dance at all at the "SARS-a-Palooza" gig he played up in Toronto, he played keyboards most of the time.

Prince is a great player though, he plays so tasty! Like Miles Davis, except with a guitar. Speaking of which, have any of you heard the Purple Rain/Auld Lang Syne boot that he and Miles Davis did? Prince is KILLING on the guitar! The Let's Go Crazy solo may be simple in technical terms, but it's got power and attitude and let's face it guitar players, I'm sure the first time you heard it, it rocked you just like it rocked Thom. Don't bag on him, remember, each and every one of you were once where he is now.
