I'd leave the original in the neck position. It'll give you a very wide tonal range between the two pickups. Except that one will be active and one will be passive, so you'll have volume issues.

My bandmate from Collar Of Skin have a Les Paul copy with EMG81, and it sounds awesome for lead guitar, the sustain is endless, the guitar is VERY quiet, the tone is great for heavy songs, teh clean tone is ok.

It's a Gibson LP Standard I've had since 1992 and I'm just a little bored with that very recognizable LP tone. It's not that I don't like that sound but it's just... I play a blues lick and it doesn't sound like me but like Gary Moore. (Well Gary Moore on a bad day anyway). And yeah, I DO plan to run it through some pretty heavy effects...
