EMG 81 on a Les Paul...

... in the bridge position. Will it sound cloud-ish or shit-ish? And what do you put in the neck position?

Why not leave the original Les Paul pickups in there? Is it Epi or Gibson? Those original pickups have a great sound that EMGs tend to overpower. Go listen to some (and don't laugh) Lynard Skynard. The solos and rhythm playing is all Gibson humbuckers... full of body and a nice high end.

I had EMGs on my old strat for 12 years, and then one day picked up a regular old US Strat, just to compare, and I haven't played the other strat since. EMGs are great if you're going to pump it through stacks of effects and pedals and blenders and microwaves.

But I spose, that's not anwering your question.

I'd leave the original in the neck position. It'll give you a very wide tonal range between the two pickups. Except that one will be active and one will be passive, so you'll have volume issues.

My bandmate from Collar Of Skin have a Les Paul copy with EMG81, and it sounds awesome for lead guitar, the sustain is endless, the guitar is VERY quiet, the tone is great for heavy songs, teh clean tone is ok.

A famous player that uses Les Paul with EMG-81?

Zakk Wildy from Ozzy.

It's a Gibson LP Standard I've had since 1992 and I'm just a little bored with that very recognizable LP tone. It's not that I don't like that sound but it's just... I play a blues lick and it doesn't sound like me but like Gary Moore. (Well Gary Moore on a bad day anyway). And yeah, I DO plan to run it through some pretty heavy effects...

I recently put some EMGs in my Les Paul Artist guitar. I only change them because the active pickups that were in that LP sucked, plus I always wanted to try EMGs. Like Otan says they're great if you run your guitar thru alot of effect. But I have a Les Paul classic 1960 reissue that I run to when I need that raw rock sound.
