aaaahhh. The BREAK. I get so wrapped up in putting together a cohesive composition that embodies all that I'm trying to say through the right choice of notes, words, chords, keys, and bridge changes, that I forget the classic break.
A break sometimes stands in place of a bridge, specially in funk. There's no extra lyrics to come up with, no extra chord changes, you just drop that shit all out and give the drummer some. (And maybe the guitarist, cuz we needs our space.) The break is such a prominent piece of the song, that in fact, lots of breaks have out-survived the originating song ("Funky Drummer", anyone?) So, just a note to y'all out there struggling to get that perfect bridge to tie the whole thing together, how bout giving the band a rest and give the drummer some ... COME ON ALESIS! TAKE IT AWAY! The 2funkE dudes don't know how to write bridges or chord changes, so we use the break in every song. Long live the FUNK!!! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time... | |
