Learning songs...

Hiya, time for yet another random question from me! lol

Now I'm spending time to craft my own creme de la maggot masterpiece, it seems I have no time to learn new stuff to increase my repetoir - i.e. stuff that friends already know and would want me to play rather than crud of my own design. Had a guy who came round the other day and 'happened to know a bit of classical', grabbed my acoustic, and commenced to make me weep with jealousy over his version of Nothing Else Matters complete with harmonics. Since then I've been meaning to learn that crap, but it seems my futile attempts at digitally mastering my take on Al Green vocals is getting in the way.

I bet you guys who play the gigs have even more of a problem right? Otan??

To be honest with you, I get bored far too quickly with trying to learn other peeps stuff. Like, I can play some Jimi, but only bothered to learn the intro to Little Wing, 'cause that's all that matters right? NOT if ya asked to play the mofo!

Dig?

The best way to learn a song - and OWN it - is to re-record it. You get DEEP into the intricacies and shit of the song.

That's what I was doing last night on Jeff Buckley's "Last Goodbye". You KNOW how crazy that song is? Chords all over the place, droning dissonance, etc, but I sat down and learnt that thing in 5 hours. I could play it for you now with my eyes closed.

They'd be closed, wincing in pain from my fingertips.

I'm old. But hey - I'm gonna play that damn song now!

hehe, I wanna learn that, but I REALLY wanna learn Grace...I just know it'll take me ages to get the intro pluckity-pluck rightity-right. I can play Lover ya Shoulda Come Over... if only with the same conviction though.
