Hows that guitar sound achieved? Hiya all,
During lots of the Lovesexy live guitar solo's and the climatic ending to the track Lets go crazy, prince often strikes a note and holds it but then it seems as if he re-strikes the note in succesion at high speed. This sound creates a really 'Forced', sound ( i cant think of a better word, sorry). Listen to point 3.53 to 3.55 of Lets go crazy. This is the sound i mean. Well my question is, What is he actually doing to get that sound? is he just rapidly re-striking the same note again? is it a wah? delay?I really dont know but am very keen to learn. Hello Lisa. I'm not sure if this is what he does, but I found a way of doing what I believe you may be referring to.
After initially playing the note, I played the same note on a different string and had a nice gritty sound as the result. It definitely caught me off guard because I wasn't trying for matching a sound, but rather wondering what sound it would produce by doing that. I hope this helps. If it's not what you mean, my bad... i don't think it's what she meant, the way eh does lets go crazy is just picking the note and putting lot's of pressure on the fretboad with the left fings,
xpisiter IF i got what you mean you're talking about unison used lots of tiems by jimi hendrix, but i dont think prince does it on Let's go crazy | |

If anybody can listen to the segment of lets go crazy which i mentioned in the initial post and thinks they know how its achieved i'd be glad to hear. thanx for the two possible explanations in the previous posts though. The sound is achieved by striking a note on the high E string while bending the B string to the same note. After that you gradually vibrate the bent note while you keep striking the two (same) notes. That's when you get that 'Growll' sound which sounds like a rapid machine gun of sound.
The same can be heard on the climax of joy in repetition on the ONA aftershow cd. Very cool effect. -----------------------------------------------------------

It's too clean to be unison effect, 2 strings at teh same time with distortion would sound kinda dirt on a good way | |

so dont striek the two notes at the same time, bend up the B string to achieve the same note fo the e string but dont striek the two at the same time, alternate the strings to keep, i do that on this way and it works, sorry for the first post, i didn't heard the song for a long time and memory didn't served me correct. | |

Lisa, I checked out the performance. As mentioned above, I'm pretty certain he is fingering a C# on the high E string, holding it and bending a B on the B string (12th fret octave) nearly up to the C# before releasing it. Done repeatedly, very fast (almost tremelo-picking the two strings), gives you a sick-ass sound. Add distortion and you're there.
The funny part, though, is after the cadenza... he does his rock-star posing thing for a while, guitar over his head, and then hurls it offstage full force. I can't imagine a tech being able to catch it, nor could I imagine it not breaking into pieces if someone didn't catch it. I may have been mistaken on this one, but it does seem like it when I tried it. Only slightly picking the second same note with one or the other slightly bent off the center of the note. Kinda gets a gritty sound in there since distortion is in the mix. Sounds like TedW hit it since he is actually referring to seeing it in a performance. Finally checked it out this weekend and I agree. Funny thing, when I tried it without distortion I realized this is the lick Chuck Berry does on Johnny B. Goode!
