It's quite in the house 2night... Who is gigging, and who is not gigging, aye?
Me, no. He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. - Albert Einstein

I don't gig yet, I just record.
I used to play coffeehouses with a friend, but I got frustrated playing someone else's music. I would sing back up (sometimes lead), and play a drum. He sang and played guitar.

I'm composing my own stuff at the moment (just experimenting) but I'm planning to get a band together in the near future... having never gigged before though it's still a scarey thought for me! Just came from a rehearsal/live recording, and the real gig will be Thursday. Now, I'm turning around and heading out to my Sunday night gig.
Before you get a band together, I'd suggest go find out if there's any open-blues jams in your city. Funk can be blues-based, so you can go test out your playing with a pre-assembled band, gain a little live-experience, and not have to go through seven drummers to get there. There's a couple of funk jams here in town too, but they're jazz-based funk, and the folks are HARSH. if you can't hang, they'll boot you off on the first tune. And no, I haven't gone yet. Too intimidating. I don't know a diminished chord from a phone cord. Open jams are also a GREAT place to network, and find out who's good in your town... make friends with em, they'll sit in on your recordings later on. Works like that. Network baby, network. That's how I suddenly lined up all THESE gigs! [This message was edited Sun Aug 10 15:57:54 PDT 2003 by otan] The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

Just finished a maniacal weekend with the band "Mukka" ( www.mukka.co.uk ), we are off on a mini-tour of Cornwall this week.
Did 2 DJ gigs in-between as resident on the usual Thursday thing I run and a feature the night after in another venue). After which, I can chill for a couple of days and hopefully write some new music and shop for some new stuff (if my cheques come thru in time!!!) 'dre Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

Busy busy busy Dre'! Good luck with the Cornish! I'm sure they're funky...
Thanks Otan for your advice... I did think of going to an open jam session actually... the only one I know of here is jazz based, so we will see. Maybe I can say I'm influenced by Sun Ra, and just play random notes while maintaining that serious pucker-face jazzist expression.
