Prince Guitar rhythms

Hi.

Would people be willing to post some guitar tab demonstrating a selection of princes varied and distinctive 'funk' style.

Also, suggestions on tonality and guitar settings would be much welcome (I use a tele). Although, i am primarily interested in the afore mentioned tab.

thanx in advance to all those who reply.

Check out the old threads for links to tab sites and song break downs. People have asked here before like this thread for example.

Was it Jimmy Jam who reckoned Prince is the greatest ever rythm guitarist? (on the UK BBC Radio docu). I'd agree - his funky rythms surpassed those before him. Totally undervalued.

Yeah. JJ said that.

The tabs do the rhythms injustice tho.

When you read the rhythms, you have to remember that MOST of his rhythm playing has a swing to it - it's NEVER straight-up 8th or 16th or dotted 13th notes. The trick is to learn that swing part, and how to staccato the notes, control hits differently, some hits are softer than others.

It's mostly just a single chord, and the trick is the delivery.

Take controversy for instance. Some hits are softer, to give it that rhythmic feel instead of just "blaah, dada, bladadada", it's more BLAH-dat-da, blah-da-datDAH"

Sure. if you know the song, that up there makes sense.

So really, all you need are some Prince chords, and then go practice your right hand technique, and your left-hand muting technique - learn how to control the volume with the left hand - looser = quieter, choked up tone. Like my song (yeah, ya'll knew THIS was coming) Star69 on the NFO release ... a VERY similar pattern plays through the entire song. Go hear it at http://www.newfunkorder.com.

And yeah, there's a bajillion posts in here on the topic.

So what are the chords to "Star 69"?

Something like C#dim to C#mdim:

4 - 4
5 - 6
4 - 4
6 - 6
4 - 4
X - X

That's all I'm doing through most of the song, except the chorus, where I change the top string to 7 so there's a dominant octave of some sort in there. Really, it was all just moving my fingers around til I heard something good, and then chucka-chucka for awhile.

There was no music theory or knowledge of chord changes applied - i just like the way the chord changed from minor to major - and even THAT I didn't know until after I'd played it for awhile.

The original riff I came up with is on the opening flash thing on my website: www.blindslim.com - same riff, but with distortion and a wah, and played on the zero fret instead of all barred up like that there.

Would anybody be willing to demonstrate some tab on this page? Im sure the search option on this site is down at the moment (hence me posting).

I would say that while based on similar principles. Prince and Jimmy nolens ( of J browns band) rhythm are distinctively different and both unique.

can any body help?

e.g how does the man play that 'chicken grease' chord in the remix of undisputed?

whats that chord in housequake at the end of every other bar?

anything would be appreciated!!!

I read somewhere that in an English magazine called Guitar Techniques this month or coming month is an article about Prince's rhythm guitar with lots of examples. Maybe you can check that out?

These chords are more like C#m7 to C#7 (minor to major, no dim)

This change has always been considered as 'not done' in the so-called "serious composing world"
Must be the same people who said that the world famous hendrix chord (E7#9) was the "devils chord" flipped off

The first chord is just plain dominant, not minor... right?

I prefer to call the first chord "cat claw at an angle" and the second chord "man with umbrella in taxi" --

I don't know WHERE you guys are getting YOUR chord names.

Maybe I'm playing it wrong or read the tab wrong... but it's a standard dominant shape barred from the fifth string.

I do like the "man with umbrella in taxi" chord, though.

if u live in the UK i recomend buying this months guitar techniques mag. I've got it and it has some good ideas in there. The examples are not true prince examples, moreso a demonstration of his particular styles.

p.s The backing tracks on the accompanying CD suck balls though
You do as I say
