The Violin Okay, I wasn't sure which forum to put this in, so I decided to put it in the Org Musician Hangout one. I didn't want to put it in the General Discussion forum, and have all the org nazis posting, "WRONG FORUM!"
Anyway, who on this website thinks that the violin is beautiful but can have a sorrowful sound to it? I love the violin, but there are some instrumentals featuring the violin are capable of making me so emotional that I can't even listen to them without crying - lol! For instance, my parents have a Christmas album by a group called Mannheim Steamroller (don't know if any of you have ever heard of them before, but they're pretty good). Anyway, they have an instrumental version of Silent Night that features violins that are so beautiful that I usually get tears in my eyes when I hear it. Does anybody feel me on this? RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I'm a violinist right here. I also have the manheim steamroller christmas album
Anyways, I'm biased because of my abilities as a violinist, but I personally feel that what you mentioned is exactly what makes the violin so revered and intimidating for many musicians. It seems to be very sensitive to the moods of the player. It really seems to sound out what the person is feeling. You can play a happy song when you're depressed, but for some reason, it will sound like the song is missing something. I love the violin, and all of the nuances that come out of incredibly slight changes in technique, be it the way the bow strikes the strings, the level of vibratto, the position you shift into, pressure and speed of bow, pressure of your fingers on the fingerboard, etc. I definitely feel you on this "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. Better by far to embrace the hard truth than a reassuring faith. If we crave some cosmic purpose, then let us find ourselves a worthy goal" - Carl Sagan

The violin in "The Ladder" and "The Screams Of Passion" gives me chills. I know exactly what you mean.

I agree that the mood of the player tends to come right through the instrument. It can be very sad, or equally furious, contemplative. . .it's pretty versitile.

I got a violin off of ebay for $50 on a whim. I haven't put any violin on my songs yet, but I plan to. It should ad a touch of "avante garde meets jerry lewis" to the songs, cuz I DEFINITELY don't have the knack for this instrument. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3
