I can never understand this one. Why would anyone want to play someone elses tradmark guitar??? For me a guitar is like a pair of underpants, would you wear someone elses underpants?? eeewww no!!! But seriously, it was only when I found my own personaly taste in guitar that I was ever truely comfortable with it. Find the Guitar for you rather than the one Prince plays

Maybe he is rich and has lots of guitars, and wants one that looks like Prince's guitar.
Prince is not the only one who uses honer telecasters too. They are great for funk and country because of the trebly sound. Chicken Pickin brutha

I have one. It was really cheap, I bought it a long time ago for novelty factor really. I generally like maple guitars anyway.
It's not a bad little guitar at all. I love teles anyway, but the Prinz ain't bad for such a cheap instrument. I wouldn't sell my kidney to buy one on eBay or anything, but if you see one cheaply, it's worth picking it up. Now I'm a lot older than when I first bought the guitar, so I really couldn't give a toss about owning a guitar just coz it looks like Prince's. For example, I'd never buy one of those overpriced Schecter cloud-a-likes from NPGMC. However, the Hohner is a budget guitar really, and you shouldn't pay much for it, so it's no worse than any other budget low-end tele clone. In fact, it looks rather nice, and plays pretty well (well mine does - lovely low action, no buzzing at all, lovely sound unamplified etc)

i half agree with this statement... sure if you play someones signature guitar you could be seen as copying them, but if you play a les paul or an american strat how many hundreds of people are you copying? the only signature series guitar that i have come across that is actually a fine instrument that could stand on its own without celebrity endorsement is eddie van halen's wolfgang and i proudly own one.

If you want P's Telecaster Cam2002, follow your hearts desire. Look how many signature guitars (mainly Stratocasters) Fender produced over the last 20 years or more. The total number of these "copy" guitars that are sold are sold at very high numbers.
And for all you people on this thread talking about the underware relation are silly. I know countless musicians famous and not so famous that have "copy" guitars. I'll bet I you do a search and you put up $1000 dollars as the pot, I could send you pictures of thousands of well-known musicians with these guitars. (I already have a couple hanging on my wall. D'Angelo and SRV for starters) And I dare you to tell them about the underware relation. If you wouldn't sue them they would kick your ass. {Maybe I'm so uptight about this topic because I would love to own my very own symbol guitar. My secert is out now}

How do they (Cloud9Mission) know that I don't want it for a collectors item? But tell me this Cloud9Mission. If you had the te prinz tele', would you not use it in your music? I'll be waiting for your reply. Thanks again to 7salles.

hey now - I use a tele because of the tone, probably because it sounds a lot like Prince's tone - but the REASON for that tone working so well (for funk) is because of the characteristics of the guitar - small headstock and thin neck results in very little sustain, making the notes more percussive.
Just like I use a strat because Hendrix and SRV use them, but the reason I LIKE that tone is because of the big headstock and the pickups - MUCH more sustain and big fat manly notes. However - a Prinz tele is like the Schecter Cloud guitar. It's not the exact same copy as the one Prince has. It's a Hofner something or other, but when Prince bought it, they obviously werent naming them Prinz yet. So, go find out what model Prince uses, or, better yet, go get a FENDER Telecaster and get a leopard skin pickguard. I think Hofner was a Fender knockoff, like Tokai, and Prince just happened to be using that one. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

The rhythm player in my dad's band used to have one, brought it over to our place all the time. I thought it looked pretty cool (though not half as cool as it looks on Prince!). Anyway, he sold it for next to nothing and got a Fender. So every now and then I kick myself for not buying it offf him back then.
I myself own a couple of guitars and my current favorite is my Fender Blue Flower Tele (<-see avatar). The sound gets really close to P if I want it to, and I think it looks really funky. Plus, no famous player I know of uses one (:hmmm: might be a reason for that...) So personally if I came across a reasonably-priced Hohner, I'd buy it. But I'd never trade my Fender for it.

YOU ARE TRIPPING! Prince used one in the America video! uhh. I think. Maybe that one is darker. Waylon Jennings used to play a cheesed up paisley telecaster... leather bindings, oh MAN that thing screamed "burn me". The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

He broke it in the America Video (thats why Wendy was playing the Hohner Te Prinz in that Vid) I think he knew he was gonna toss it. Anyway, he gave the broken one to Sheila E. as a gift, & she gave it to a charity and they auctioned it for some astronomical amount...Ed Burns (the sucky douche bag director/actor) bought it. Sheila told me at the Alameda County fair about a year or 2 ago. Nero

Yeah I think James Burton used to play the pink paisley tele with Elvis, so that one's p[retty famous. Come to think of it, it's pretty weird that P never played a paisley tele, isn't it? Oh well. Anyway that reminds me: somwhere in the Housequake photogalerries, you can see an old picture of P playing a FAKE Hohner! It looks like butterscotch fender tele with a different pickguard... weird. Anyone got info on this?

I gotta agree with you Csharp. Those symbol guitars look damn cool and have killer tone!

How can you TELL what kind of tone they have? He runs them through 14 pedals. The clean guitar playing on the Cross is one of them guitars, I spose, and MAN they sound weak... I know he plays 8s, or 9s? something superlight. (of course, again, I'm from the school of SRV tone - 13s on a strat, which is about as opposite to Santana as you can get).
BUT, hey, if you like the tone on the Cross, okay, cool. It ain't for me. I never understood WHY he switched from the Tele to the Cloud. The tele has 2 single coils, and his solos featured him using either pickup at different times, or both, the Cloud had a single humbucker... so the tonal choices go from 3 to 1... it baffled me. Anybody got a clue on that? Did he ever explain in an interview WHY he likes the Cloud over the Tele? The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3
